One more time there will be a new generation of Audi A4 that will get combustion engines. The new Audi A4 has now appeared as an Avant better than ever in front of our spy photographer’s lens. A lot changes, but a lot stays the same.

Audi will hang up the combustion engine in 2033, at least in Europe. As of that year, Audi only sells electric cars in Europe, with the result that it launched its last new model with combustion engines years earlier. From 2026, Audi will therefore only introduce new fully electric models. That means that the new generation A4 that is in the development rooms will be the very last you can get with combustion engines. The new generation Audi A4 can be seen better than ever in these spy photos. For example, this test sample does include the final rear light units.

The current generation Audi A4 (B9) has been running since 2015 and was facelifted in 2019. This means that the model is now almost eight years old and needs to be replaced, especially when you consider that major competitors BMW 3-series and Mercedes-Benz C-class with introduction years of 2018 and 2021 successively are a lot younger. Audi will probably pull the curtain off the new A4 this year, a car that has been caught as an Avant in these spy photos. You probably don’t have to count on a new platform down to the tiniest nut. It seems that the new A4 builds on the MLB-evo platform that the current model also uses.

Will the Audi A4 just get a new packaging? No. On a technical level, things are changing. For example, the new Audi A4 will most likely also come with plug-in hybrid powertrains. The current model, in contrast to its smaller brother A3, is not yet available with a plug and that is striking. The 3-series and C-class have been available as plug-in hybrids for years. The RS4 may also get a plug-in hybrid powertrain, although the question is whether Audi will actually show the door to the 2.9 V6 for that new top version. You can also count on a range of (mild-hybrid) petrol and diesel engines.

And an electric A4? It will probably come, but it will take years. Audi comes first with the Q6 e-tron and an electric equivalent of the A6: the A6 e-tron. It is only logical that the Audi A4 will eventually get an electric A4 e-tron next to it. On a technical level, these models will have nothing in common.
