AutoWeek can show you exclusive images of a brand new autonomous electric Volkswagen. The block box on these patent plates is of a completely different order than the models you are used to from the brand.

Volkswagen is slowly but surely expanding its electric ID family. The brand recently added the ID5 to the European delivery range and the production version of the ID Buzz will follow next year. MOIA, Volkswagen’s division that deals with mobility services, has already developed an autonomous version of the ID Buzz that will actually be used for commercial services around 2025. MOIA is undoubtedly interested in the autonomous Volkswagen, of which AutoWeek can show you an extensive series of patent drawings exclusively.

Volkswagen Sedric Concept (2017)

The strikingly angular Volkswagen in these photos is probably not a ready-made production model, although the moving room already seems much more concrete than the Sedric that Volkswagen presented in Geneva in 2017. As far as concept is concerned, the new still unnamed Volkswagen resembles these drawings that Sedric follows closely.

Volkswagen autonomous concept car patent

Volkswagen

We see a sober-looking model whose lidar modules on the roof reveal that it must be able to work its way through traffic independently. The lighting at both the front and rear consists of simple horizontal units that span the entire width of the car. What we find above the rear lights is striking. Here, Volkswagen seems to have placed a kind of baggage claim that is possibly more than just a hip design element. Because the wheels are far on the corners, the Volkswagen has a long wheelbase and that naturally means a lot of interior space. That interior is probably the most important, because the car seems to be intended as an autonomous city taxi. The still mysterious Volkswagen only has a set of sliding doors on the right side, exactly the side where you get out as a passenger in Europe.

It is not yet known when Volkswagen will present the car visible on these patent plates, but the car has already given up part of its secrets.
