New BMW 2 Series Active Tourer – Back to Basics

BMW is pushing ahead with what is arguably its most controversial model: the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer. The MPV-like can prove itself in a completely new form and costs at least €41,558 for the time being. What do you get for that money?

BMW 218i Active Tourer – €41,558

Well, a 218i Active Tourer without further additions. That means 136 hp from BMW’s well-known 1.5-liter three-cylinder and also a standard dual-clutch automatic transmission, because the Active Tourer is no longer offered with a manual gearbox.

No fake gauze

The 2-series Active Tourer, not to be confused with the 2-series Coupé, is like most other BMWs in three versions. The basic version can be recognized by a finish that is usually matte black, although we spot some chrome around the grille and in the rear bumper. The Luxury has much more chrome and therefore actually looks more luxurious, while the variant with the M sports package has to be especially sporty. In the case of the 2-series Tourer, however, that also means a huge piece of fake mesh in the rear bumper and that is an element that is missing on the entry-level model and on the Luxury.

An electric tailgate is actually standard. This also applies to LED lighting all around, but in a simple form. The beautiful headlights and taillights of the press plates do cost extra and are part of the ‘Premium Pack’ of 2 mille. The wheels are also a good way to recognize a simple 2 Series. They measure 16 inches and are wrapped in 205/65 R16 tires, an almost old-fashioned tall size. In terms of color, there is actually quite a bit to choose from, as long as it is not a color: white and black are both ‘free’.

personalize

Also inside there is something to personalize without spending a cent on extras. The decorative strips, which can be found on the dashboard and on the door panels, among other things, are available in four flavors. ‘Eukalyptus offenporig’ wood costs €140 extra, but you can choose freely from two types of aluminum and one type of piano lacquer. A big missing factor is the round iDrive button, but that applies to all versions of the new 2-series Active Tourer. As a plaster on the wound, the curved screen combination, consisting of a part of 10.25 and a part of 10.7 inches, is completely standard, just like wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Navigation is also part of it, although there is certainly something to upgrade the functionality of the system.

The budget-conscious BMW driver sits on manual, non-heatable seats covered with black fabric. A terrible fate, but thanks to two-zone automatic climate control, it’s not quite done. Cruise control is of course also standard, while parking is facilitated by parking sensors and a camera. This makes it easy to keep up with the basic 2 series, but we can’t catch it on excessive luxury. For example, you have to pay extra for adaptive cruise control (standard on an Aygo!), the key must be taken out of your pocket to unlock the car and an automatically dimming interior mirror shines due to its absence.
