BMW has recently introduced the 2-series Gran Coupé in its range and is working hard behind the scenes on a completely new 2-series Tourer. These models will eventually be joined by a completely new 2-series Coupé, which was caught during test work at the Nürburgring Nordschleife!
BMW’s current 2-Series Coupé is being followed up in a completely new generation that sticks to the well-known recipe. This means that the new 2 Series Coupé, unlike new and upcoming family members such as the 2 Series Gran Coupé and 2 Series Tourer, will not be a front-wheel drive. It just gets rear-wheel drive again! The 2-Series Gran Coupé and 2-Series Tourer, like the 1-Series, use the UKL platform developed for front-wheel drives, a basis that is not included in the new 2-Series Coupé. It is quite possible that BMW will pull out the CLAR platform for the new Coupé, the basis that the brand applies among other things under the new 3-series. Good news for the enthusiast!
Not only does BMW remain faithful to the design of the current model for the new 2-series Coupé, the new 2-series Coupé is also not far from the model that you can still order from BMW in terms of design. These new spy photos clearly show that the new 2-series Coupé also has a relatively long nose and a fairly short rear. Those who are not so charmed by the large grille that BMW is sticking on the new 4-series and on the upcoming M3 and M4, does not have to scrap the 2-series Coupé from its shortlist.
BMW will undoubtedly be supplying the new 2-series Coupé again with an extensive range of powertrains. The engine range will include relatively modest four-cylinder petrol and diesel machines, but in the long run it will very likely also get a hefty M2 variant that will deliver about 400 hp of rear-wheel fun. It is not inconceivable that BMW of the new M2 (just like the upcoming M3 and M4) will also have a version with xDrive all-wheel drive in addition to a rear-wheel drive variant. The gap between the regular petrol versions and the mighty M2 is filled by a new M Performance model, possibly the M240i that should deliver around 340 hp. We expect the new 2-Series Coupé to be on the market around spring 2021. So please be patient.
