Does the updated offer more on the M level?
The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé seems to be getting an intense refresh soon. So intense, in fact, that the wrapped updated 2 Series Gran Coupé even appears to be completely new on these spy plates. But whether that is actually the case is debatable.
About four years after the introduction of the 2-series Gran Coupé, BMW considers the time ripe for innovation. Just like the 2-series Active Tourer, the 2-series Gran Coupé is a front-wheel drive car in the base. This is in contrast to the 2-series Coupé, which shares its base intended for rear-wheel drivers (and four-wheel drivers) with its big brother 3-series. The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé has been captured quite well from all angles by our spy photographer.
It is not the first time that we can show you the renewed 2-series Gran Coupé. Earlier we received a set of plates via AutoWeek reader Ivar Camps. The photos that we present to you in this article are of significantly better quality and show a different engine version. This test model not only has wing mirror caps that at least come from the M accessory guide, but also blue brake calipers and a set of double exhaust pipes on either side of the butt. That is striking. Even in its sportiest form – as the M235i – the current 2-series Gran Coupé does not have four exhaust tailpipes at the bottom of the rear bumper. Are we dealing with an M2-like here? Who knows. In any case, it is not a 218i.
BMW does not seem to make major changes to parts such as the bonnet, front wings and headlights and the windows are – although BMW tries to mislead – identical to those of the current 2-series Gran Coupé. We therefore seem to be dealing with a thorough facelift that mainly concerns the rear of the car. The license plate is higher in the tailgate and the rear lights are also being renewed. At least, the part of it that is in the tailgate.
