The new BMW 5 Series Touring has rolled past our spy photographer’s camera again. Silent and apparently without exhausts underneath, although appearances can be deceiving.

Almost two months ago, the all-new next-generation BMW 5 Series last surfaced. Even then it was a Touring. One that can go on the road at least partly electrically. We already know that from the 5 series, the big question is whether there is also a fuel engine on board, whether we already see the fully electric i5 Touring here. The now spotted prototype looks like two drops of water on the previously spotted car and again it says ‘electrified vehicle’. At the rear we look in vain for exhaust tips, but that doesn’t have to say everything these days. Sometimes they are hidden just a little further under the car. The apparently closed grille may mislead us; again, behind a mesh, slats of a normal grille seem to be hidden.

Whatever the case, it is clear that the new BMW 5-series Touring will have a striking rear. At least, especially along the flanks. In the D-pillar there is not only a subtle ‘Hofmeister kink’, because the window line rises a bit earlier to the rear. Furthermore, the rear window seems to be a fraction more slanted than with the current 5-series. All in all, it will give the 5-series Touring a more dynamic appearance, although it is exciting to what extent the luggage space and visibility in the blind spot will be negatively affected.

We will get the answers to the questions raised by this spot later this year, because we expect the presentation of the new BMW 5 series before 2024. Incidentally, there is another M5 in the barrel for lovers of sportier stuff. Just like the latest sporty top versions from the Mercedes-Benz tube, it will be a plug-in hybrid. It remains to be seen whether BMW combines a six-cylinder with an electric motor, or goes for a V8 again.
