Later this year, BMW will launch a completely new 2-series Coupé, a car that, unlike the 2-series Gran Coupé and 2-series Tourer, will get rear-wheel drive. Today we can show you the first pictures of the new M2 Coupé, the absolute top version of the new BMW 2-series Coupé.
Anyone who walks into the BMW showroom now (by appointment) will still find the 2-series Coupé there. That car still shares its basis with the previous 1-series. The current 1-series made the transition to a basically front-wheel drive basis at its generation change, but the new 2-series Coupé is simply a rear-wheel drive coupé according to a well-known recipe. This makes the 2-series Coupé a unique offer within the 2-series. After all, the 2-series Gran Coupé and 2-series Active Tourer are both front-wheel drives. Although the new 2-Series Coupé will undoubtedly get numerous engine versions, it is the M2 Coupé that makes the hearts of horsepower enthusiasts beat the fastest. The new BMW M2 Coupé can be seen for the first time on this brand-new set of spy photos.
The packaged test specimen visible in these photos, caught on a frozen lake in Sweden, betrays its M-genes especially with its two sets of two thick blowpipes hanging at the bottom of the buttocks with a subtle rear spoiler. The M2 Coupé appears to have wider rear wheel arches. Those wider hips are undoubtedly related to the wider track compared to the regular, yet to be revealed versions of the 2-series Coupé. Behind the alloy wheels we observe large, perforated brake discs, specimens where blue calipers are happy to sink their teeth.
The last M2 Coupé had a 370 hp and 465 Nm strong six-in-line under the hood (2,979 cc). The M2 Competition was with its 410 hp and 550 Nm strong six-in-line a lot more powerful, although the M2 CS with its 450 hp and 550 Nm was the absolute top M2. The new M2 Coupé will be in basic trim in terms of muscle strength close to the previous M2 Competition. It is not yet known whether there will be a variant with manual transmission in addition to a version with automatic transmission. The new M3 and M4 are available with a manual gearbox in 480 hp standard form. That sounds hopeful for the purists. A step below the M2 and its derivatives to be introduced later, there will probably be another M240i, the M Performance variant.
