Five years after the launch of the previous generation, Kawasaki had completely revamped the ZX-10R and ZX-10RR for model year 2021, most notably the new aerodynamic nose. For 2022, the Ninja ZX-10R(R) will get a new livery… and the new River Mark logo.
“From the recently introduced aerodynamic package that creates up to 17% more downforce to the engineering masterpiece that is the four-cylinder, water-cooled 998cc ZX-10R engine, the 2022 Ninja ZX-10R and ZX-10RR deliver a lexicon of performance technology from A to Z .” That, according to Kawasaki, is its supersport flagship in a nutshell.
With two variants available for the upcoming season, the liter class Ninja “pit box” consists of the road and track-based Ninja ZX-10R plus the highly competitive Ninja ZX-10RR. While there are some notable differences between the two machines, the majority of the leading technology is shared by each platform delivering outstanding performance and technical features. We now know all about how that drives, on our own TT circuit earlier this year the ZX-10R could be put through the paces by our man Ron.
Common to both is full LED lighting and an aero package with integrated winglets for significant extra downforce combined with a tall screen and adjustments to the footpeg and handlebar position to help the rider fold up and provide minimal wind resistance at track speeds . With large TFT gauge displays and smartphone connectivity via Kawasaki’s recently updated Rideology app, the engineering nature of these machines simply has to be experienced to be fully appreciated.
In terms of electronic driving aids, the integrated KIBS braking system is fitted as standard, as are an up/down quick-shifter, launch control, lean angle function and a state-of-the-art Bosch IMU that provides precise control over the sport-style variable traction control plus selectable riding modes and engine braking control. There’s even electronic cruise control and the option of heated grips, like the generous specs of these consummate supersport machines.
Braking on both models is handled at the front with M50 monobloc calipers operating on ø330mm rotors and both machines use the horizontal rear suspension system which is almost identical to the set up on the machines used by the Kawasaki Racing Team in WorldSBK .
And speaking of racing, the Ninja ZX-10RR exudes performance with an impressive array of exotic items that are all standard. These include lightweight Marchesini wheels and Pankl components that cover connecting rods, pistons and gudgeon pins. RR-specific cam profiles feature special intake and exhaust valve springs suitable for extended use at high rpm, allowing the RR model to run 400 rpm higher than the stock ZX-10R. Add a single seat and Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa SP tires and you have a machine that is ready to be converted for track use and capable of making the podium its own podium.
Both now featuring the Kawasaki River Mark logo are the color options for 2022 Metallic Diablo Black/Metallic Matte Graphenesteel Gray or Lime Green/Ebony/Pearl Blizzard White for the Ninja ZX-10R and Racing Lime Green for the Ninja ZX-10RR.
