New diesels for BMW X5 and X6

BMW is expanding the range of both the X5 and X6 with a new diesel version: the xDrive40d. The six-cylinder self-igniter benefits in the X5 and its ‘coupĂ© brother’ from mild hybrid technology.

The diesel range of the X5 and X6 already consists of the 231 hp xDrive25d, the 265 hp xDrive30d and the M50d with 400 hp. The gap between the xDrive40d and M50d is filled by the new xDrive40d. Just like the last two engines, it is a six-cylinder with a capacity of 3.0 liters. The machine is coupled to a 48-volt starter generator, which makes the diesel a mild hybrid.

The power of the new 3.0 is set at 340 hp and 700 Nm, power that is distributed over all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission. The starter-generator is able to provide 11 horsepower extra muscle power and has the consequence, among other things, that the SUVs can ‘sail’ under certain circumstances with an internal combustion engine switched off. The two sprint in 5.5 counts to 100 km / h. The average consumption of the X5 xDrive40d is, depending on the chosen version, at 5.9-6.4 l / 100 km. With its new diesel engine, the X6 is marginally more fuel-efficient and uses 5.8-6.2 l / 100 km. According to BMW, the fresh self-igniter already meets the Euro 6d emission standards that will come into effect early next year.

Prices and a Dutch introduction date will follow soon.
