Especially a Corsa brother

Next year, Lancia will once again spread its wings to countries outside the Italian home market. The brand is reintroducing itself with a completely new and electric Lancia Ypsilon in many markets, including the Netherlands. In these photos the new Lancia Ypsilon can be seen from all angles for the first time.

Anyone who had hoped that the new Lancia Ypsilon would be something spectacularly new will have to be disappointed. After all, the new Lancia Ypsilon is a Stellantis model and that parent company would be crazy if it did not use an existing base for the compact Italian. Of course it does. The Ypsilon will roll off the production line in Figuerelas in Zaragoza, Spain next year. Indeed: in the factory where Opel also produces the Corsa. It is therefore not earth-shattering that the new compact Lancia appears in these photos next to its technical sister model from Opel.

In April this year, Lancia looked ahead to the design language of its new models with the Pu+Ra HPE Concept. Not much of the visual drama that was packed with that show car seems to be returning to the new Ypsilon. Not surprising: after all, the Ypsilon must become a volume model. Broadly speaking, the Lancia Ypsilon appears to show great similarities with the Corsa in terms of shape, especially when viewed from the side. Yet you can at least expect a completely unique front and a completely unique buttock on the Ypsilon. We already see something of that rear. It is noticeable that the small Lancia has a tighter cut tailgate than the Corsa, complete with a more horizontal part at the bottom of the rear. Furthermore, the Ypsilon is – unfortunately – still very fanatically in the camouflage stickers.

Lancia Ypsilon: similarities and differences with the Opel Corsa.

Lancia wouldn’t be Lancia if it didn’t cover the inside of the Ypsilon with beautiful materials. We see it in conceptual form in the Pu+Ra HPE Concept, which has recently been installed in the center console for a special version. Also interesting is the historically accurate Alcantara that we see on the seats and that may also return to parts of the dashboard. In 2024 it will probably be recycled stuff with a hip, catchy name. Anyway: it reminds us of Lancias from days gone by.

The Lancia Pu+Ra HPE also showed some table fun.

The fact that the Lancia Ypsilon is related to the Corsa also means that it will be a brother of the Peugeot 208. Under and in the Ypsilon you can expect technology that you know from those models. In any case, count on the arrival of mild-hybrid engine versions with 100 hp and 136 hp 1.2 Puretech machines. The electric versions are at least as interesting. The Peugeot 208 and Opel Corsa are available as e-208 and Corsa Electric with 136 hp and 156 hp electric powertrains. These more powerful versions have the new battery pack that has 51 kWh of lung capacity and gives the pair a range of about 400 kilometers. We also expect these electric powertrains in the Lancia Ypsilon. The very first electric Lancia ever will also be able to travel up to about 400 kilometers on a full battery. But there’s more. The Ypsilon will also have a 240 hp sporty top version called Ypsilon HF with a second electric motor and therefore four-wheel drive.

More Lancia

It doesn’t stop at a new Ypsilon. For example, Lancia will launch a 4.7 meter long electric liftback in 2026 that will be called Gamma. In 2028, the brand will return to the C-segment with a new, fully electric Delta. Every new Lancia introduced from 2026 will be completely electric. The Ypsilon will therefore still be available with combustion engines.

The Netherlands will be one of the first countries to which Lancia returns next year. Do you think the new Ypsilon will be Lancia-worthy?
