New electric motor Volkswagen: stronger and more efficient

Volkswagen has a new electric motor and related drive parts ready for its electric ID series. The new unit delivers more power than we are used to and, according to Volkswagen, uses power more efficiently.

While we wait for the undoubtedly imminent unveiling of the Volkswagen ID7, the brand is already presenting us with a novelty that may debut in that ID7. It has a new piece of propulsion technology ready for use in the company’s MEB models. It is a new 286 hp electric motor that can be mounted in the rear and drives the rear wheels. A nice step compared to the currently strongest unit in the rear, which delivers 204 hp. There is also no shortage of torque: it delivers up to roughly 550 Nm.

More power is nice, but electric driving is mainly about efficiency. That has been worked on. Improved temperature management, among other things, should ensure that less power is ‘lost’ next to the drive. The new electric motor can, for example, lose its heat via the gears of the associated transmission. A separate electronically driven oil pump is no longer necessary. There is also a smarter inverter that controls the power supply to the electric motor more efficiently. Volkswagen states that it will enter a production model this year and there is a good chance (given the timing) that the ID7 will benefit. Of course it does not stop there.
