Less money for less horsepower

BMW’s plug-in hybrid monster SUV gets a new engine version that reduces the starting price of the model by tens of thousands of euros. We are talking about the BMW XM 50e, a variant that is not surprisingly also the least potent of the XM bunch.
The BMW XM, which was only available as a plug-in hybrid, was previously available in the Netherlands with two powertrains. It was – and is – available as a 653 hp variant simply called ‘XM’ and as an XM Label Red with a system power of no less than 748 hp. At the bottom of the power ladder, BMW is now parking a new engine version called the XM 50e. The BMW XM 50e is a plug-in hybrid, just like the XM and XM Label Red, but has to make do with fewer cylinders.
While the BMW XM and XM Label Red both have a 4.4 liter V8, the BMW XM 50e has to make do with a 3.0 inline six. The six-cylinder is supported by a 196 hp electric motor. The system power is 476 hp and 700 Nm, making it 177 hp less potent than the engine version directly above it. Of course, even with 476 hp you won’t be short of anything. The BMW XM 50e sprints from a standstill to a speed of 100 km/h in 5.1 seconds. The electric range is 76 to 84 kilometers and is comparable to that of the more powerful versions. Shifting is done with an eight-speed M Steptronic automatic transmission.
The BMW XM 50e costs €129,989 in the Netherlands, making it considerably less expensive than the simply called The price difference between those two flavors is no less than €48,000. The price difference with the top version XM Label Red – which costs more than €204,000 – is of course much greater. We expect more detailed information soon.
