New Ford Edge has grown tremendously

In the Netherlands, the Ford Edge has been discontinued for a while. The big brother of the Kuga, cut from the Dutch delivery range in 2019, now gets a completely new successor. This is the new Ford Edge!

AutoWeek has found the first photos of the all-new Ford Edge in the database of the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Transport. At least, ‘the’ all-new Ford Edge…? In any case, it is the new Edge as it comes on the market in China. That certainly does not mean that we have the international version of the Edge here. Still, the Edge is an interesting model to give some attention to, not least because Ford sells a really huge number of SUVs in China.

Ford Edge China

Ford Edge, third generation (China)

The brand new Ford Edge that we can show you before its official launch was developed by Changan Ford, the joint venture that Ford has in China with – you guessed it – Changan Automobile. The new Edge naturally follows the current generation of the Edge in China. That Edge is not only available in China as a five-seater, but also has a longer, here never delivered Edge Plus variant with seven seats. The new Edge in these photos is available with both five and seven seats, replacing two cars in one fell swoop. The new Edge is 5 meters long, 1.96 meters wide and 1.77 meters high. This makes it considerably longer than the current five-seat Edge (4.78 meters) and even longer than the longer Edge Plus (4.88 meters). The higher positioned Explorer is only 5 centimeters longer. There is a distance of 2.95 meters between the wheels of the new Edge and a 252 hp 2.0 four-cylinder will be placed under the hood. That 252 horsepower has a car weight of just under 2,000 kilograms to move.

Ford Equator

The new Edge is even bigger than this Equator

The new Ford Edge is suffused with a design language that you don’t see on models of the brand in Europe. We already know the design style from cars such as the new Mondeo that cannot be shipped to Europe and the interesting Evos. In addition, Ford in China has a number of SUVs in the range with such a front. We mention the Equator, Equator Sport and the Explorer, which was recently facelifted especially for the Chinese market. Which brings us to the apparent proliferation of Ford SUVs in China. For example, Ford has the here unknown Territory and an electric version of it in the showrooms. Above it is the Equator Sport (4.63 meters) and the here called Kuga Escape, the Equator without Sport addition, which is about 4.9 meters long. The Equator costs almost the same in China as the Escape/Kuga, although it is much larger. According to the same philosophy, the Chinese Ford Edge will be replaced by the larger Edge that you see in these photos, which was developed specifically for the Chinese market. More Chinese Ford SUVs? Secure. Ford also sells the Everest and thus the aforementioned facelifted Explorer.

The Ford Edge as it came on the market in the Netherlands in 2016.

Ford Edge in the Netherlands

In 2013, Ford showed the Edge Concept, a preview of the second-generation Edge that was finally unveiled in 2014. In 2016, Ford also put the Edge on the Dutch price list. Until 2019, the Edge was only available with 2.0 liter TDCi diesel engines, machines with single or twin turbo. The SUV went under the knife in 2019 and then only came to our country as a 238 hp 2.0 EcoBlue ST-Line. That retouched Edge only lasted a few months. It was introduced in March 2019 and disappeared from the Dutch market in August 2019.

Between 2015 and 2019, just under 130 copies of the Edge were registered in the Netherlands. A few copies of the first generation Edge were also sold in the Netherlands. We certainly do not expect the new Edge on the market in Europe. Is that a loss?
