New Ford Maverick: step below the Ranger

Ford is working hard on a relatively compact pick-up, which will get a place under the Ranger. The new Ford Maverick can be seen better than ever on a set of brand-new spy photos.

Ford has a compact pick-up in the development rooms, dusting off a trusted model name. The new Maverick will be a double cab pick-up that will be positioned below the Ranger at least in the United States. The Maverick shares its technical C2 base with the Kuga / Escape and the Ford Bronco Sport and will soon be produced side by side with the latter SUV in Mexico.

The Maverick is relatively low on its legs for a pick-up and has a fairly short loading platform due to the double cabin. It is expected that it will soon be available not only with four-wheel drive, but also with front-wheel drive. Like the Bronco Sport, the Maverick gets a self-supporting body, none body-on-frameconstruction like the F-150, for example.

In the Netherlands we know the name Maverick mainly from Ford’s version of the Nissan Terrano II that was sold in our country until the end of the nineties. In Australia, Ford used the model name for a refreshed Nissan Patrol, but there were other Mavericks. Ford introduced a two- and four-door sedan with that name in 1969 in the United States and the Mazda Tribute, launched in Europe in 2000, was also known as Maverick in various countries. What does the Ford in these photos have in common with the majority of the above-mentioned models? Very little, besides the fact that the pick-up is very likely not on the market in the Netherlands.
