The Honda Civic Type-R is known as one of the most purist hot hatches in its segment and so the unveiling of the all-new Civic Type-R can best be described as ‘a thing’. That new Civic Type-R has now been unveiled and it is the most powerful ever.

To start with the bad news: we don’t know yet how strong the new Honda Civic Type-R is. So we’re relying purely on Honda’s claim that the 11th-generation Civic’s Type-R will have the strongest VTEC turbo engine it’s ever built. The previous generation Honda Civic Type-R had a 2.0 under the hood that released 320 hp and 400 Nm on the front wheels. The Honda’s new hot hatch goes over that for a while. Honda previously indicated that it only wants to sell electrified cars in Europe. This Civic Type-R seems to be an exception to that rule, because we hear nothing about a form of (mild) hybrid support.

The 2.0 VTEC four-cylinder is a further development of the machine known to connoisseurs perhaps better as 17YM that was in the previous Civic Type-R. The housing of the turbo has been modified and is more compact, but has more ‘vanes’ than before. The exhaust system has also been improved and lighter. The still unknown amount of horsepower and Nm is not released via an automatic transmission, but simply again via a manual six-speed gearbox on the front wheels. More fine grinding? Secure. Honda indicates that the rev-match system has been improved and that the Brembro braking system of the previous Type-R has been held up to the light. The new hardware has already set the Civic Type-R a new record at Suzuka Circuit. On that Japanese circuit, the new Type-R was 0.873 count faster than its predecessor.

The new eleventh generation Civic looks a lot less wild than its predecessor and so the new Civic Type-R also looks quieter than its predecessor. After all, the base model already has fewer folds, corners and holes than before and Honda continues that line with the top version. The new Type-R does not look dull at all. We have a hood with a cooling opening, sporty bumper work with black accents, black side mirror caps and a buttocks with a hefty spoiler on top and a diffuser at the bottom with three exhaust tailpipes in the middle. The new Civic Type-R sits on black 19-inch wheels that Honda has wrapped Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires around. The front is further characterized by its modified air vents and the Type-R badge. Of course Honda has more colors available in the paint shop than the Championship White you see in these photos. The car will also be available in Rallye Red, Racing Blue, Crystal Black and Sonic Gray Pearls.

Honda has also made a sporty party of the interior of the new Honda Civic Type-R. We see alcantara upholstery on the door panels, red trims and stitching, but the eye-catcher is of course the bright red furniture with suede-like upholstery.

The first copies of the new Civic Type-R will come to Europe in early 2023. Dutch prices will follow in the run-up to the market introduction.
