The activist movement Extinction Rebellion will demonstrate again on Saturday 11 March on the A12 near The Hague. It is the sixth time that the activists literally get in the way of Dutch motorists. On Saturday, January 28, more than 1,000 activists blocked the A12. The movement says the new protest is getting bigger than ever. The burden that the motorist experiences as a result, if possible, too.
The movement believes that the government should immediately stop providing subsidies for fossil fuels. Extinction Rebellion says it will keep coming back to the A12 until this stops. The AD writes that the municipality of The Hague does not see it as useful to propose an alternative place. “We are not in consultation with the organizers, they have not registered anything now. Previous contacts between us and them were very sporadic, they are doing everything they can to avoid that,” said a spokesman for mayor Jan van Zanen. “We had the Malieveld ready for them on Saturday, they could do their thing there, but they were not interested. If you can’t talk to people, you can’t put forward alternatives,” the spokesperson told AD.
During the latest ‘non-violent demonstration’, more than 700 activists were arrested who refused to obey the police’s order to leave the A12. Several people had chained or glued themselves. They also sprayed graffiti on the tunnel walls.
