New hypercar McLaren caught

McLaren is working hard behind the scenes on the development of the hybrid Artura, but the exclusive sports car manufacturer has more news in the barrel. In a few years’ time, the brand will release a rock-hard successor to the P1, but before that, the brand will add another model to its Ultimate Series.

Our spy photographer caught a wrapped up McLaren. It is still not entirely clear what exactly McLaren is planning with this newcomer, but that we have seen him before is beyond dispute. In November, Techzle was able to exclusively show a set of patent sketches of a new McLaren hypercar. The packaged test model snapped today is clearly the same car.

The heavy spoiler work, the holes on the aft deck, the placement of the exhaust and the half-opening side windows: all design elements that can be seen on both the mentioned patent sketches and on this test specimen. That heavy spoiler work also leaves no doubt about the ‘Series’ to which McLaren adds the super sports car. That must be the Ultimate Series, the absolute top class within the portfolio that currently consists of the Elva, the Speedtail, the Senna and Senna GT-R.

It is not inconceivable that the car, which may be called Specter, is not a completely new model. There are rumors, among other things, that the ‘Specter’ shares its basis with the long and widely sold out Senna GTR, the non-road legal circuit version of the naturally fierce Senna. The Specter would also get the same 825 hp twin turbo V8 behind the front seats as the extremist named after Ayrton Senna, but it may not stop there. The ‘Specter’ – which, incidentally, is laced with design influences from the Ultimate Vision GT Concept from 2017 – would receive the hybrid system of the upcoming Artura, the hybrid sports car that will replace the entire Sport Series next year. Do not be surprised if the Specter is allocated more than 1,000 horsepower. Whether the new McLaren will be available in a ‘large’ edition of a few hundred copies or whether it will remain at around ten to twenty pieces remains to be seen.
