New Hyundai Accent is extravagant sedan

Remember the once brave Hyundai Accent? Now there’s a completely new one, and it’s wilder than ever! He will make his public debut in India as Verna. Of course he will not come to the Netherlands. Is that a bad thing?

The Hyundai Accent as you know it spread over a number of generations – initially still as Excel – in the Netherlands has never aimed to win over the consumer with a wild appearance. In the Netherlands, the Accent was succeeded by the i20 in 2009, but elsewhere in the world the little brother of the Elantra has never left. Although the last generations have already been given a relatively exciting appearance, the new Accent is by far the wildest ever. The new Hyundai Accent – there called Verna – has been presented in India.

The new Hyundai Accent / Verna may be the little brother of the 4.68 meter long Elantra, but it is certainly not a small sedan. With a length of 4.54 meters, it is more than 15 centimeters longer than its predecessor. Its wheelbase is also certainly not on the small side at 2.67 for a sedan in this segment. The new model is clearly a Hyundai of the present time. The Hyundai Accent/Verna has a relatively wildly drawn body, complete with striking creases in the sides, a front that is reminiscent of the Kona, Elantra, Staria and Grandeur and interlinked taillights with a striking shape. Also striking is the chrome accent at the C-pillar and the steeply sloping tailgate that almost follows the same line as the rear window.

In the interior we see a two-spoke steering wheel and not only a large infotainment screen, but also a large digital instrument panel that is incorporated in the same panel.

In India, the Hyundai Verna will be available with a 115 hp naturally aspirated 1.5 that can be linked to a manual six-speed gearbox and a CVT. Above that is a 160 hp 1.5 turbo engine that, in addition to the manual six-speed gearbox, is also available with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Prices in India range from €12,225 for the basic version and the turboless engine to around €19,500 for the Verna with the most powerful engine and the thickest version.

Should Hyundai also bring a comparable model, with or without an electric powertrain, to Europe? Why or why not?
