Jeep introduces the all-new Grand Cherokee. For the first time in the nearly thirty-year Grand Cherokee history, the SUV is on the market as a plug-in hybrid. The Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe is of course extra interesting for the Netherlands.

Jeep takes the Grand Cherokee to the next level. That sounds like pure marketing talk, but these words are not coming from Jeep itself. That became clear when Jeep presented the Grand Cherokee L at the beginning of this year and is now confirmed with the new Grand Cherokee. Indeed, the shorter version without L. The Grand Cherokee L presented at the beginning of this year is a seven-seater and a new body style for the Grand Cherokee family. We now meet its shorter brother: the L-less Grand Cherokee.

Dimensions and interior

The new Grand Cherokee is not a seven-seater but a five-seater. With no space required for a third row of seats, the new Grand Cherokee with a vehicle length of 4.91 meters is 9 centimeters longer than its predecessor, but is no less than 29 centimeters shorter than its larger 5.2 meter L- brother. The difference in length is not only in the rear overhang. The wheelbase of the new Jeep Grand Cherokee is also just 13 centimeters shorter than that of the L-version at 2.96 meters. However, in width and height, the two SUVs are equal to each other.

The appearance of the Grand Cherokee is also very similar to that of the already known Grand Cherokee L. The SUV has the same nose with relatively flat headlights with Jeep’s characteristic grille with seven slots in between. At the rear, we observe greater differences. The flat rear lights on the Grand Cherokee are connected to each other by a plastic strip, while the ones on the back of the Grand Cherokee L are separate from each other. The rear window and therefore the D-pillar also slopes more than that of the larger body variant.

The dashboard of the new Jeep Grand Cherokee is the same as that of the larger seven-seater version, which means that a lot has changed compared to the outgoing model. Jeep gives the car a 10.1-inch infotainment screen and a 10.3-inch digital instrumentation. Depending on the chosen version, the co-driver also has a 10.25-inch display in front of his or her nose. Jeep supplies, among other things, sixteen-way electrically adjustable seats that are not only heated and ventilated, but also have a massage function. LED mood lighting is on hand to further differentiate the interior of the new Grand Cherokee from that of the outgoing model.

Plug-in hybrid

The new Jeep Grand Cherokee is the first in its bloodline to be available with a plug-in hybrid powertrain. That plug-in hybrid Grand Cherokee 4xe has a 380 hp and 637 Nm strong powertrain that is made up of two electric motors, a blown 2.0 four-cylinder petrol engine and an eight-speed automatic transmission. The battery pack placed in the bottom has a capacity of 17 kWh and is good for an electrical range of 40 kilometers. The tailgate is located in the left front fender.

Don’t need a plug-in hybrid powertrain? No problem, Jeep also has the Grand Cherokee with a 297 hp and 353 Nm strong 3.6 V6. A Grand Cherokee with this power source can tow up to 2,812 kilograms. Isn’t that enough? Then go for the mighty 5.7 V8 that delivers 362 hp and 529 Nm of torque.

Jeep will soon deliver the Grand Cherokee in the United States in various flavors. Depending on the version chosen, you have an electronic differential lock on the rear axle and air suspension. Also new for the SUV: with little load on the powertrain, the front axle is decoupled, making the Grand Cherokee a rear-wheel drive. That saves consumption. Jeep will soon deliver the Grand Cherokee as a Trailhawk version fixed for off-road use. That flavor is also available for the plug-in hybrid 4xe. The trim levels have well-known names such as Laredo, Altitude, Limited, Overland, Trailhawk, Summit and Summit Reserve.

When it comes to safety systems and other indulgences, the Grand Cherokee is also a mustache. Jeep has systems such as Full-Speed Collision Warning, Rear Cross Path Detection, adaptive cruise control with stop&go function, Lane Deperture Warning, Lane Keep Assist, blind spot detection, night vision, a 360-degree camera and a digital interior mirror for the Grand Cherokee made available. More indulgence comes in the form of an inductive charger and a new 10-inch head-up display.

Good news: the Jeep Grand Cherokee is also coming to Europe. The new Jeep Grand Cherokee will debut on the Dutch market next year.
