Maserati GranTurismo Folgore

Maserati has finally presented the successor to the GranTurismo launched in 2007 and which disappeared in 2019. The new Maserati GranTurismo will be the first electric Maserati ever to hit the market, but will also be available with a biturbo V6.

An enormous wind of renewal is blowing through the formerly conservative Maserati. With the Grecale, the brand recently presented a smaller SUV brother of the Levante. That Grecale gets combustion engines, but was also immediately presented as an electric Grecale Folgore. Although the Grecale was the first electric Maserati that the brand proposed, it will not be the first EV of the brand that you can actually buy. That will be the electric version of this brand new GranTurismo.

Folgore

Yes, the Maserati GranTurismo also gets a fully electric version called Folgore. That is certainly not a childish car. The Maserati GranTurismo Folgore gets three electric motors that together are good for a system power of 761 hp and – don’t worry – a maximum of 1,350 Nm of torque. This powertrain helps the GranTurismo Folgore reach a speed of 100 km/h in 2.7 seconds and if you keep the pedal pressed against the ground for a total of 8.8 seconds, you will zoom over the asphalt at a speed of 200 km/h. The top speed of this four-wheel drive electric GranTurismo is a very decent 320 km/h for an EV.

The Maserati GranTurismo Folgore has a 92.5 kWh battery pack in its bottom, a set of batteries of which 83 kWh can actually be used. Maserati has not yet released how many kilometers the GranTurismo weighing 2,260 kilograms manages to squeeze out. Thanks to the 800V on-board voltage, the maximum charging power is 270 kW. The electric powertrain of the GranTurismo Folgore does take a bite out of the luggage compartment. You can lose 270 liters in it, while you can lose 310 liters in the versions with horny V6.

Modena and Trofeo

Indeed: the Maserati GranTurismo also comes with the Nettuno-V6 that debuted in the MC20. In the GranTurismo, however, no version of that 3.0 V6 delivers 620 hp as in the MC20. Maserati has devised two versions with the biturbo V6 for the GranTurismo: the Modena and the Trofeo. The first has a 490 hp and 600 Nm strong variant of the six-cylinder in its nose, good for a 0-100 sprint in 3.9 counts and a top speed of 320 km/h. Above that is the in every way sportier GranTurismo Trofeo. In that version, the V6 is good for 550 hp and 650 Nm and helps the GranTurismo reach a speed of 100 km/h in 3.5 seconds. In 11.4 seconds you crash from standstill to 200 km/h. Its top speed: 320 km/h. The petrol versions have an eight-speed automatic transmission. As you might expect, the weight of the Modena and Trofeo is at 1,795 kilos considerably lower than that of the Folgore.

Maserati GranTurismo

The new Maserati GranTurismo is recognizable as GranTurismo from every angle. Like its predecessor, the car has a long muzzle and the body has a relatively classic line thanks to the many curves. Aggressive folds, sharp corners and spoilers that divert attention from the basic form therefore shine through its absence.

At 4.96 meters long, the GranTurismo is 8 centimeters longer than the model it replaces. The wheelbase of the new GranTurismo is, however, a good centimeter shorter at 2.93 meters. Striking, we don’t often see that with a generational change. The Folgore and the versions with a petrol engine can be distinguished from each other, among other things, by looking at the bumpers. In addition, the Folgore has blue openings on the front fenders and you will find the tailgate under the left rear light. The petrol engine GranTurismo has a fuel filler flap above the rear wheel arch on the left-hand side. In addition, you will of course find no exhaust tailpipes at the bottom of the buttocks of the electric Folgore. The Trofeo version has extra spoiler work and, among other things, extra black accents.

Image of the interior of the new Maserati GranTurismo is not yet available at the time of writing. Maserati does speak of a smart infotainment system including a digital assistant that you can chat to. Maserati is immediately announcing a special launch version of the model: the PrimaSeries 75th Anniversary Launch Edition. That sounds like a great series. Initially, Maserati also talked about the arrival of a new GranCabrio, but the brand is not releasing anything about it now. Between 2007 and 2019, Maserati built 28,805 GranTurismos and 11,715 GranCabrios worldwide.
