Opel has released the first images of the new Astra. This does not make us any wiser, although it does indicate that the unveiling of the new Opel Astra is not long in coming.
The Astra is one of the handful of Opels that still stands on a base of former parent company General Motors. The current Astra (K) presented in 2015 will be followed this year by a completely new model, a car that will be placed on a platform from Stellantis. Opel already shows a bunch of detail photos of the new Astra.

The new Opel Astra is undergoing a considerable metamorphosis with its generational change. Just like cars like the Mokka and Crossland, the new Astra is fitted with the Opel Vizor. This means that the Astra also gets a muzzle where the relatively flat headlights are optically fused with a black closed panel in between. The viewers themselves are IntelliLux copies and are therefore equipped with matrix LED technology. They probably won’t be by default. The model name of the car is proudly written on the tailgate, as the current fashion in car land seems to dictate. Opel also shows that the Astra will in any case be available with a roof in contrasting color, in the case of the yellow Astra in these photos in black.

A strong breeze of innovation is also blowing in the interior. Opel is already showing something of the Pure Panel, the black panel in which both the instruments and the screen of the infotainment system are housed. In the case of the Astra, the panel is bent in the middle so that the infotainment screen also faces the driver. Below that display is a series of physical buttons, shortcuts for things like the climate control and the rear window heater.

Under the carriage of the new Opel Astra is the modernized version of the EMP2 platform developed by Groupe PSA and now used by Stellantis, which is also under the new Peugeot 308 and DS 4. We are therefore not only aiming for the arrival of 110 hp and 130 hp 1.2 three-cylinder petrol engines, but also for the arrival of at least one plug-in hybrid powertrain. The new 308 will be available as a Hybrid 225 and as a Hybrid 180. In the first, a 180 hp 1.6 petrol engine is combined with a 110 hp electric motor and a 12.4 kWh battery. The Hybrid 180 has a 150 hp 1.6 and a 110 hp electric motor and the same 12.4 kWh battery. The Peugeot 308 comes with it about 60 kilometers on pure electrical power, the Opel Astra will have to be able to achieve a comparable range.
The new Opel Astra will soon roll off the production line in Rüsselsheim, Germany. Like the current model, the new Astra will not only be available as a hatchback, but also as a SportsTourer.
