Charmed by the new Opel Astra, but do you prefer a station wagon? Even then you can simply put Opel’s new compact middle class on your shortlist. This is namely the brand new Opel Astra Sports Tourer, a practical pack mule that will also be on the market as a plug-in hybrid.
The new Opel Astra ushered in a new era for the model. The Astra is no longer a model developed by General Motors, but a car completely developed under the wing of Stellantis. The new Opel Astra is a direct kinsman of the new DS 4 and Peugeot 308. Just like the 308, the Astra also comes with a new station wagon. This is the extra spacious Opel Astra Sports Tourer.
luggage compartment
Where Opel gave the previous generation Astra Sports Tourer a rear that differs from the five-door hatchback with its own tailgate and taillights, the new Astra looks straight from the back like two drops of water on the Astra hatchback. That is the first time in the 30-year Astra history. Opel has expertly extended the roofline of the Astra hatchback to the rear, with a large luggage space as the main result. In addition, the wheelbase has grown by 5.7 centimeters compared to the Astra hatchback to 2.73 meters. The new 4.64 meter long Astra Sports Tourer swallows 608 liters of luggage. If you flatten the rear seats, the volume of the luggage compartment is 1,634 liters. With that, he swallows considerably more than the station wagon of the previous Astra, which had it with the rear seats upright at 540. The load volume of the new Astra Spors Tourer is equal to that of sister model Peugeot 308 SW and with the rear seats upright even larger than that of its big brother Insignia (560 litres).
Opel will supply the Astra Sports Tourer not only with petrol and diesel engines, but also with a plug-in hybrid powertrain. The battery pack eats some of the cargo space, so you can carry 548 liters to 1,574 liters in the Opel Astra Sports Tourer Hybrid. If we put the Astra Sports Tourer next to its competitors, it is noticeable that he has to recognize his superior in terms of space in the Skoda Octavia (640-1,700 liters) and Kia Ceed Sportswagon (625 liters). In principle, the Ford Focus Wagon wants the same number of liters as the Astra Sports Tourer and the difference with the Volkswagen Golf Variant (611 liters) is negligible. Opel supplies an adjustable loading floor (Intelli-Space) at an additional cost with which you can determine the height, but which can also be placed at an angle of 45 degrees.
engines
Opel will supply the Astra Sports Tourer with a 110 hp 1.2, a three-cylinder that also has a 150 hp appearance. In addition, count on a 1.5 CDTI diesel engine of 130 hp and of course the aforementioned plug-in hybrid. The plug-in hybrid Astra Sports Tourer has a 150 hp 1.6 petrol engine that works together with a 110 hp electric motor. The system power is 180 hp and 360 Nm. The battery pack measures 12.4 kWh and provides the Astra Sports Tourer with an electric range of about 60 kilometers. A six-speed manual transmission is standard on the petrol and diesel models, and an eight-speed automatic transmission is available at an additional cost.
The new Opel Astra Sports Tourer will be at dealers next year. Prices will follow in the run-up to the market launch.
