New Renault crossover shines through

Renault shows some details of a new crossover in a video. It is a concept version of the ‘Kiger’. A tougher brother of the Renault Kwid.

We now also know the Renault Kwid in Europe, although that is because it comes here as the brand new fully electric Dacia Spring. The Kwid has been available for years (with a fuel engine) in India, among other places, and has a seven-person brother in the form of the Triber. There is also a crossover on the same modular basis. That car is still referred to as ‘Kiger’ and we get the first sign of life from it today.

In a short video, Renault shows three detail shots of a concept car, of which a production version should eventually come on the market as Kiger. Especially the nose is already quite visible and the striking lighting makes it clear that it is still a concept. Otherwise, Renault’s caption ‘showcar’ provides that clarity. The Kiger seems to get a quite different front than the Kwid and the Triber and to be honest, we see almost some Opel Mokka in it. A sturdy rear spoiler above the rear window suggests that it will be a study model with sporty touches. Green accents in the grille and door handle (photo 3) further arouse the expectation that there is electric drive on board, although it may also turn out to be a fun style element. Given that the Kwid is also available as ZE, it would not be surprising if the Kiger also got such a variant.

While the Kiger shares its CMF-A platform with the Kwid and Triber, there is another car that may rub closer to it. Alliance member Nissan recently unveiled the Magnite, which is based on the same model. The Kiger probably follows the example of that car in terms of shape and dimensions. In the barely four-meter-long Magnite, a 1.0 three-cylinder with 95 hp serves as the power source and no electric version has yet appeared on the horizon. What exactly is the relevance of all this for Europe, you may ask? Well, not much yet. This is a Renault intended for India, but hey, the Kwid ZE eventually came our way under Dacia flags. So never say never.
