New small electric Volvo is called EX30

Volvo has quite the electrical taste. With the EX90, it recently presented a new large electric SUV and the brand also has plans at the bottom of the Volvo range. There is a small electric Volvo coming and it will be called EX30.

At the beginning of November, Volvo pulled the curtain on the EX90, a brand new and always electrically powered SUV that is in fact the successor to the XC90. Although the XC90 will stay on for several years in various markets, the EX90 is Volvo’s new flagship. Volvo also sees an EV in a much lower segment. A model is coming that will be positioned below the XC40 and it is now known that it will be called EX30.

During the presentation of the EX90, Volvo already hinted at the arrival of a new smaller model. In conversation with Automotive News Europe, Volvo CEO Jim Rowan refers to the new small electric Volvo with model name ‘EX30’. The Volvo EX30 will be produced in China, but is not only intended for the Chinese market. The EX30 is also built in Chengdu, Daqing or Taizhou for the export markets.

The Volvo EX30 will be available with battery packs in several sizes and will definitely be a step smaller than the XC40. With the model, Volvo hopes to appeal to a larger and especially younger buyer group.

Interesting detail: Volvo does not yet see much in making battery packs interchangeable. Especially from a security point of view. According to Rowan, constantly attaching and unscrewing a battery pack may pose a safety risk.
