There is a new generation Toyota GT86 and Subaru BRZ in the barrel. The now eight-year-old models will have successors and Subaru will present its new BRZ later this year!
Subaru places an image on one of its Twitter pages that shows a piece of a wrapped model. The image does not release much, for example Subaru only shows a wheel and a cooling slot for the front door. More interesting is the announcement with which the image comes hand in hand. Subaru has announced that it will be pulling the curtain on the completely new Subaru BRZ in the fall of this year.
The Subaru BRZ, which has been discontinued since mid-year, is the sister model to Toyota’s GT86. Just like the GT86, the BRZ entered the international car market in 2012 and was a relatively affordable coupé with a 200 hp naturally aspirated 2.0 that it sent power to the rear wheels via a manual gearbox. Both the BRZ and the GT86, which had a third sister model in the form of the Scion FR-S in the United States, have been facelifted several times in recent years to keep the appearance somewhat up to date. Currently only the GT86 is still in production, but the years are now really starting to count for that car.
Little is known about the new generation Subaru BRZ and Toyota GT86, although they will again be rear-wheel drives. Whether the Japanese manufacturers will give up the atmospheric 2.0 and opt for a turbo engine, is currently also not yet known with certainty. It is not even inconceivable that the new BRZ and GT86 will be placed under the skin on a further development of the current platform. We are curious!
Only 38 Subaru BRZ have been sold in the Netherlands since 2012. In the Dutch introduction year 2012, 22 copies were registered, in 2014 and 2015 respectively 8 and 7. In 2016 the last BRZ in our country was registered. Toyota has sold 156 GT86s in the Netherlands. Toyota also sold most of its coupé in the 2012 introduction year. In that year, 113 GT86s found an owner. In 2013 only 14 units were registered. In the years 2014, 2015 and 2016 consecutively 13, 6 and 1 GT86 (s) found a home.
