Ready for the Wilderness
Those who do not find Subaru’s regular versions adventurous enough can go for the Wilderness flavors in the United States. Now the brand new Subaru Crosstrek also gets a Wilderness jacket.
Subarus such as the Outback and the Forester are already available in the United States as an extra adventurous Wilderness variant and Subaru’s smallest high-legged model can now also be ordered in such a mud suit. We are talking about the new Subaru Crosstrek, whose predecessors you know in the Netherlands as XV.
The Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness is, according to the American branch of the brand, the roughest Crosstrek it has ever presented. The Crosstrek Wilderness has an adapted and reinforced chassis and comes with factory off-road rubber. Its ground clearance thus increases to almost 24 centimeters, although that is only a good centimeter more than with the regular Crosstrek.
Of course, the Crosstrek Wilderness, just like the eponymous versions of its bigger brothers, is filled with exuberant black plastic parts at the bottom of the doors and above the wheel arches. The front and rear bumpers are also richly covered with black plastic. The Wilderness has a specific grille, special alloy and strikingly designed fog lamps. A small collection of orange accents provides some extra frivolity. In the United States, the Crosstrek Wilderness always has a 185 hp and 240 Nm strong 2.5 that distributes its forces over all four wheels via a CVT. That automatic transmission has been adapted for adventures off the beaten track and thanks to the arrival of an oil cooler for the cooking oil, the maximum towing weight has doubled to almost 1,600 kilograms, according to Subaru.
The seats in the Crosstrek Wilderness are covered with a water-repellent material that Subaru calls ‘StarTex’. We also see copper-colored stitching, Wilderness logos on the headrests, all weatherfloor mats and an easy-to-clean luggage compartment mat. For the time being it is not clear whether and when we can welcome the new Crosstrek in the Netherlands as the new Subaru XV.
