Suzuki injects its model range with fresh blood by introducing a new S-Cross. The new Suzuki S-Cross is again a mild hybrid and will be available at the Dutch dealers this year. Although the latest S-Cross looks quite different from the outside from the outgoing model, Suzuki remains emphatically faithful to the concept of its predecessor.
Highlights
- Always mild hybrid
- Just a Suzuki, not a Toyota with Suzuki elements
- Known technique
- From December in the Netherlands
AutoWeek could already show you the first photos of the new S-Cross and now Suzuki has released the crossover in its entirety. Officially we are dealing with the third generation of the S-Cross. Although the outgoing S-Cross is currently simply called S-Cross in the Netherlands, the official international name is SX4 S-Cross. This means that the new type is also a distant descendant of the SX4 delivered between 2007 and 2013. What does Suzuki’s latest incarnation of the S-Cross bring?
Mostly much of the same. With a length of 4.3 meters and a wheelbase of 2.6 meters, the new Suzuki S-Cross is exactly the same as the outgoing model down to the millimeter. The track width at both the front and rear also corresponds to that of the S-Cross that will soon leave the Dutch showrooms. In addition, the powertrains that Suzuki supplies in the new S-Cross are already known from the outgoing model. The youngest S-Cross is therefore a further development of its predecessor and therefore gets the mild-hybrid 1.4 BoosterJet Smart Hybrid powertrain that Suzuki introduced in the S-Cross last year.
Engine and transmission
The 1.4 BoosterJet Smart Hybrid powertrain also delivers 129 hp and 235 Nm in the new Suzuki S-Cross and, as before, it is supported by a 14 hp starter generator. It also assists during acceleration. The power goes to the front wheels via a manual six-speed gearbox, although Suzuki will also supply the S-Cross with a six-speed automatic transmission. Both transmissions can be combined with AllGrip four-wheel drive. The front-wheel drive variant with manual transmission is the fastest of the engine and gearbox combinations and helps the S-Cross to 100 km/h in 9.5 seconds. In that configuration, the S-Cross puts a very reasonable 1,180 kilos in the shell and each version is allowed to pull up to 1,500 kilos (braked). The average consumption of the manual version with front-wheel drive is 5.3 l/100 km. The automatic front-wheel drive lust with 5.7 l/100 on average a little more, the same applies to the four-wheel drive versions with manual gearbox and automatic transmission (5.9/100 km and 6.1 l/100 km).
design
Although the windows of the new Suzuki S-Cross, with the exception of the third side window, are strongly reminiscent of the outgoing S-Cross, the entire packaging is new. The S-Cross has a sturdy nose with large headlights that are connected to each other by means of a slat right through the large grille. The S-Cross has attached wheel arches complete with curves in the sheet metal above. The rear of the S-Cross is mainly characterized by the immense rear lights with colorless glazing. The chunky units are also visually connected here. At the bottom of the rear we see a coolly designed bumper with large black plastic parts and (closed) grilles. You can store 430 liters of luggage in the trunk. If you flatten the rear seats, the load volume increases to 1,230 litres.
Equipment
Suzuki will deliver the new S-Cross as Comfort, Select and Style. The standard equipment of the basic version already seems quite spacious. For example, the S-Cross standard includes adaptive cruise control, a 7-inch infotainment system that supports both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, LED headlights and LED taillights. An extensive package of safety systems is also available. This includes Lane Departure Prevention, Lane Departure Warning and traffic sign recognition. The Select version adds, among other things, keyless entry, automatic climate control, heated seats and the Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Cross Traffic Alert safety systems. Top version Style also has half leather upholstery, a 9-inch infotainment screen, 17-inch alloy and a 360-degree camera.
Suzuki will put the new S-Cross at dealers from December 17. Prices will follow at a later stage. Interesting news: Suzuki announces the arrival of its first electric car(s) before 2025. Suzuki may be allowed to shop on Toyota’s shelves for these electric models again.
