The all-new upcoming Toyota Camry will be the first to combine a hybrid powertrain with all-wheel drive if desired. We know this thanks to the latest teaser plate, which shows the corresponding type plate.
It really says it: ‘AWD HEV’. The ‘AWD’ obviously stands for ‘all-wheel-drive’, the ‘HEV’ for Hybrid Electric Vehicle, or a hybrid without a plug. This means that we know at least one thing for sure about the new Camry: Toyota will offer it with the combination of all-wheel drive and hybrid technology. That combination in itself is not new. In Europe we have the RAV4 Hybrid with all-wheel drive and in North America there has even been an AWD version of the Prius since 2018. Until now, Camry buyers had to choose: either all-wheel drive or hybrid. This will no longer be necessary in the future and will undoubtedly be welcome, especially in the snowy rural areas of the US and Canada.
Whether the Camry Hybrid AWD will also be entrusted to European buyers is highly questionable. Since 2019, the current generation Camry has been on the European and Dutch price lists again, but the car plays a role in the margins in most European countries. It is traditionally a bestseller in North America, but due to the rise of the SUV, that role is also considerably less obvious than before. There will also be a completely new model, of which we have already shown you a teaser.
