Also for the Netherlands?
Toyota has presented a new version of one of its most important models. We are not talking about the Corolla or RAV4, but about the Camry, which is still difficult to find, especially in the United States. It is undoubtedly not without reason that the new Toyota Camry makes its public debut on the other side of the pond. It turns out: the Camry will always be a hybrid from now on!
For years, the Toyota Camry was not only the most popular Toyota in the United States, but also the most popular passenger car. The Toyota RAV4 is now the absolute top seller The States, but the Camry still enjoys enormous popularity. Toyota sold more than 295,000 copies of it last year! The outgoing Toyota Camry in the Netherlands always has a hybrid powertrain. The new Camry is now also always a hybrid in the United States. This means that the regular 2.0 four-cylinder petrol engines, the 2.5s without electric assistance and the 3.5 V6 will have to be retired.

Although the silhouette of the new Toyota Camry is very similar to that of the current one, the model is really completely new. Just look at the shape of the windows and the shape of – especially – the rear doors. If such things remain unchanged, it usually concerns a model that is a further development of its predecessor, but that is not the case here. The new Camry has C-shaped headlights that are somewhat reminiscent of the Prius and has a wide grille at the bottom of the front. The part between the headlights is relatively closed, which also means the Camry is optically in line with cars such as the new Prius, Crown and even the bZ4X.
We also see strong similarities between the new and the outgoing model at the rear, but everything is really new. The rear is characterized by taillights that follow the line of the headlights with their C-shape. Between the rear light units we find a plastic strip where Toyota writes out the model name of the car in a decent size. Things like the rear bumper look more curved and therefore more pronounced than that of the Camry it replaces.

In the Camry we find a fairly tidy dashboard that, with its horizontal lines, looks calmer than the interior of the outgoing generation Toyota Camry. The infotainment system – now 8 or 12.3 inches in size – is now more integrated into the cockpit. Behind the steering wheel we see a digital instrument cluster that measures 8 inches as standard and 12.3 inches as standard. Toyota has clearly chosen not to ban physical push buttons. Smart and ergonomic.

In the United States, the hybrid powertrain of the Toyota Camry consists of a 2.5 four-cylinder that, together with an electric motor, produces 228 hp. There is also a four-wheel drive variant with a 2.5 and two electric motors that produce up to 235 hp.
Will the new Toyota Camry also come to the Netherlands? That remains to be seen. In 2019 – the first year of sales since the Camry returned to the Netherlands – 115 units were sold. In 2020, only 78 units were registered and a year later even only 53. In 2021, the registration counter remained at 24 units. So far this year, 18 units have been delivered.
