New Toyota Mirai up close

The second generation of the Toyota Mirai is eager to take the hydrogen car market by storm in early 2021. This test car shows that there is apparently still something to hide in terms of appearance until then.

The Toyota Mirai should already be on the market in the first quarter of 2021, so that means that Toyota is currently finishing the i’s. In Michigan, indeed the American state where the ‘Big Three’ still send hefty gas guzzlers onto the road every now and then, the Mirai is tested in practical conditions. Our local spy photographer was given the opportunity at a gas station to take a close-up picture of the Mirai. That seems superfluous, since the Mirai was already shown in ‘production form’ almost a year ago, but apparently there is still reason for Toyota to cover things up.

Unfortunately, we do not become much wiser, but given the placement of the stickers, it seems that both the front and rear bumper may be slightly different in shape than expected. What can be seen is that the headlights have a slightly different signature than on the Mirai shown at the beginning of this year. This could also be the case for the rear lights; they are very enthusiastically packed. There are no noticeable changes on the dashboard.

Cheaper and better range

Earlier this week it was announced that the new Mirai will be considerably cheaper here in the Netherlands than the previous one. Toyota previously indicated that the range is about thirty percent above that of the current model. For this Toyota gives a range of 500 kilometers, so count on a range of about 650 kilometers. Another important difference from the previous type is that it is now a rear-wheel drive car. More details about the Mirai will be revealed this year, because in December we will see the real production version. As mentioned, it will be on the market in the first quarter of 2021.
