Spending New Year’s Eve alone may sound unusual at first. We give you five tips on how you can end the year mindfully and with joy.
You can spend New Year’s Eve alone for a variety of reasons. This can even take the pressure off you to make the last night of the year special. With these five tips you will be able to enjoy the upcoming New Year’s Eve alone.
1. Tip for New Year’s Eve alone: Collect memories
If you’re spending New Year’s Eve alone, it’s worth using the time wisely: Consciously reflect on the past year. Photos can represent individual pieces of the puzzle to reflect the year in its entirety. What beautiful moments do you take with you from the year? What sad events are you thinking about? Have your dreams and goals come true?
Maybe you want to create a photo album or scrapbook about the past year – this way you can make sure that none of your souvenir photos are lost. Alternatively, you can make your own calendar for next year. For each month you can stick a suitable picture that you associate with a beautiful moment from the past year. These craft ideas also provide an opportunity to upcycle old newspapers or leftover wrapping paper, which you can use to decorate your photo book or calendar.
2nd tip: Enjoy time with yourself on New Year’s Eve
Celebrating New Year’s Eve alone gives you the opportunity to spend valuable time with yourself. Pamper yourself and only do what is good for your soul. Maybe these ideas are right for you:
- Treat yourself to your own wellness program: for example, take a long bath or care for your skin with a soothing facial mask.
- Cook yourself a delicious New Year’s Eve meal. Maybe you would like to take the opportunity to try out a new recipe?
- Make yourself comfortable on your sofa with a homemade tea and a cozy blanket. Watch your favorite film, listen to a nice audio book or read a good book.
3. Set goals and resolutions for the new year
If you spend New Year’s Eve alone, you can consciously think about the next year on the last evening of the year. What goals and resolutions would you like to set for yourself both professionally and personally? It’s best to write down your thoughts and keep the piece of paper in a safe place, for example in your calendar or diary.
Next year on New Year’s Eve you can look at your goals from the previous year and reflect on what you actually achieved. It is important that your goals are realistic. Think about how you can achieve your New Year’s resolutions. Maybe one or two goals can be achieved together with good friends, for example if you want to do more sport. This will not only be more fun, but it will certainly motivate you too.
4. Experience New Year’s Eve traditions consciously and sustainably
Celebrating New Year’s Eve alone doesn’t mean you have to forego traditions. For some, wax casting or the film “Dinner for One” are classic New Year’s Eve events. Others like to decorate their home at the turn of the year with small lucky charms or garlands. By using these rituals, you’ll get in the mood even if you’re celebrating alone. Maybe you always have a traditional New Year’s Eve meal, such as raclette or fondue. Just because you’re spending New Year’s Eve alone doesn’t mean you have to give up these traditions.
By the way, you can make many New Year’s Eve traditions sustainable without much effort:
- On New Year’s Eve, try out festive recipes with regional and seasonal ingredients. Our Utopia seasonal calendar shows you which foods are in season and when.
- If possible, only use reusable things for your New Year’s Eve decorations to protect the environment. For example, instead of disposable streamers, you can use garlands that you can reuse every year.
- For many people, colorful fireworks are a natural part of New Year’s Eve. Aside from the fact that most of them are banned in 2021 anyway, there are also other good reasons against fireworks: Silverster firecrackers and rockets produce over 2,000 tons of fine dust emissions – one percent of the total annual amount in Germany. Alternatively, you can watch a fireworks show on TV or online, for example. So you don’t have to miss out on the traditional spectacle.
5th tip: Don’t spend New Year’s Eve alone – meet others virtually
Just because you’re home alone on New Year’s Eve doesn’t mean you can’t spend time with your friends or relatives. You can still see your loved ones via a video call or video conference without any risk or great effort. Maybe you would like to countdown to midnight with people important to you and toast the new year virtually? This way you won’t feel lonely and you can give your loved ones good New Year’s greetings.
