Peugeot e-3008

Since Peugeot ‘conquered’ leaked images last week, we already know what the new Peugeot e-3008 looks like from the outside. Now it’s time for the content, because today Peugeot is finally pulling the curtain on the new SUV. For the time being as an electric Peugeot e-3008, but it doesn’t stop there.

  • First car on new STLA Medium platform
  • Three electric versions, but also (mild) hybrid and plug-in hybrid
  • New i-Cockpit with 21-inch screen

The Peugeot e-3008 is not just a new Peugeot. The innovation goes further than that, because the car also introduces a new platform and an accompanying new electric powertrain. Better said: electric powertrains. There are already three of them. The basis is a version with front-wheel drive, 210 hp, a 73 kWh battery and a range of 525 kilometers. This version is also available with four-wheel drive, with the electric motor on the rear axle increasing the total power to 320 hp. The highlight of the series is the Long Range. With 230 hp, it is certainly not the most powerful of the bunch, but it does carry a uniquely large battery of no less than 98 kWh for this segment. The result: a driving range of approximately 700 kilometers! The batteries are initially purchased from the Chinese BYD, but later come from ACC. This is a previously announced joint venture between Stellantis and Mercedes-Benz, which should give both manufacturers more control over the battery supply. The production of the ACC batteries takes place in Europe.

Fast charging of the electric Peugeot e-3008 is done via a 400V system with speeds of up to 160 kW. An 11 kW on-board charger is fitted as standard for home or neighborhood use, while a 22 kW version is on the options list. Vehicle-to-load (V2L) functions are also available, making it possible to use the e-3008’s battery to power electrical devices.

Platform

The fact that the enormous 98 kWh battery fits has everything to do with the new platform on which the Peugeot e-3008 rests. Unlike the STLA Small platform, which has so far been used for the Jeep Avenger, among others, this STLA Medium base is almost completely new. There is still room for combustion engines and it is therefore not a pure EV basis, but according to Peugeot the electric drivetrain did serve as a starting point. Compared to existing platforms, the situation is actually reversed: in a car like the 308, the electric drivetrain has been adapted to the existing platform, while in the 3008 electric was always the basis.

Electric or hybrid

Yet the e-3008 is quite traditional in many respects, but according to Peugeot that is actually an advantage. At 2.73 meters, the wheelbase is a lot shorter than (rear-wheel drive) rivals such as the Kia EV6 and the Volkswagen ID4, resulting in a relatively large overhang at the front and rear. The external dimensions of the new 3008 are also close to those of the current one in other respects. It is 9 centimeters longer, 5 centimeters wider and 8 centimeters lower and has a more ‘fastback-like’ profile. At 520 liters, the luggage compartment is the same as that of the existing 3008, although the flat rear window makes it less easy to stack above the parcel shelf. For the space here, it does not matter whether you take the electric or non-electric version. The electric Peugeot e-3008 can tow 1,250 to 1,350 kg, excellent values for an EV.

Those who prefer not to drive electrically can soon contact the Peugeot dealer for one of the two hybrid options. The first of these is the Hybrid 136 e-DCS-6, an essentially mild-hybrid powertrain that has just been introduced in the current 3008. The second is a plug-in hybrid with 195 hp, a power that we have not yet encountered in the 3008. This powertrain has a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Details about these engine versions will follow, Peugeot will first focus on the electric e-3008.

Triple tusks

Peugeot e-3008

The fact that the Peugeot (e-)3008 is the standard-bearer of a new generation of Stellantis products is also evident from its appearance. The e-3008 is undoubtedly Peugeot, but it also brings a number of visible novelties inside and out. We see more rounded shapes and less sharp creases and a new generation of the front with ‘triple tusks’ and a black bar between the headlights. The entire car is also more rounded, with a strongly sloping rear window without a rear window wiper. The tailgate features a relatively new, but very fashionable form of dealing with type designations for Peugeot: both the brand name and the type name are in the center of the tailgate. The wheels should not be left undiscussed: just like with the 408, the specimens shown are not ‘all around symmetrical’, but the filling runs in a straight line from one rim edge to the other. Very special, and apart from the 408, still unique in the car world.

Standard fabric

There is also a lot of news on the inside, but also a lot that is recognizable. How new the 3008 is is evident from the fact that the steering wheel and control levers on the steering column are completely new and are therefore not transferred from an existing model. Recognizably 3008 we find the multi-layered center console, which flows smoothly into a similarly constructed dashboard. The whole is covered with a cozy gray fabric, which gives the interior a cozy and homely feel. This is standard in all versions and the fabric always returns on the backrest of the front seats.

Peugeot e-3008

Peugeot obviously also sticks to the i-Cockpit principle, but implements it differently. For example, a screen combination now appears to ‘float’ in front of the dashboard, because the mounting point is not visible to the occupants. As standard, two 10-inch screens are hidden behind one curved glass plate, but in more expensive versions it is actually one continuous 21-inch screen. With a touch-sensitive part in the middle and an instrument panel at the height of the steering wheel, that is. The lower-placed, extra ‘touch screen’ from the 308 also returns here, but has been improved. This i-Toggles screen with shortcuts can now be swiped left and right, so that even more functions can be quickly accessed. The entire infotainment is still based on that of the 308, 408 and other recent Stellantis products, but better and, above all, faster. Fortunately, because that couldn’t hurt.

Allure or GT

When it comes to versions, Peugeot keeps things nice and clear. The new Peugeot (e-)3008 will be available as an Allure and as a GT. The latter has a black roof and is the car in the photos. The prices are not yet known.
