In mid-December, Nissan finally closed the gates of its factory in Barcelona where it produced Navara and e-NV200 until recently.

As part of the implementation of cost savings, Nissan has definitively closed its factories in Barcelona, Spain. Although several candidates have come forward in recent months to take over Nissan’s production facilities, it is still unclear who will be sourcing the factories.

The last copy of the Navara destined for the European market rolled off the production line at the Zona Franca factory in mid-December. This also seems to end the existence of the Navara in Europe for the time being, although Nissan previously indicated that it is still investigating whether it is lucrative to bring the Navara from Thailand to Europe, for example. In Thailand, Nissan is currently building the facelifted variant of the pickup.

The first car built by Nissan in Barcelona: the third generation Patrol.

Nissan produced its first car in Barcelona in 1983: the then current Patrol. It was the first Japanese car to be produced on European soil, Nissan proudly reports. Until 2001, 196,000 Patrols saw the light of day there. Since 1983, Nissan has built 3,345,000 cars in Barcelona spanning 15 different models and generations. For example, Nissan assembled 375,000 Terranos between 1993 and 2005 and also built the second and third generation of the Pathfinder. Do we remember the last generation Pulsar that Nissan delivered in Europe? That car was also built in Spain between 2014 and 2018. The Navara (P300) was added to the portfolio of the Spanish factory in 2015, but that was not the only commercial vehicle that Nissan built there.

Sit comfortably in the NV200.

For example, in 2002 Nissan added the second-generation Renault Trafic-based Primastar to the production lines of its Spanish plants. Up to and including 2014, Nissan built 732,000 copies. From 2009 Nissan built the NV200 and from 2015 also its electric variant, the e-NV200. 49,000 copies of this electric commercial vehicle have been built.

The Chinese Great Wall appeared to be interested in taking over Nissan’s production location in Barcelona, but is no longer on the shortlist. The Spanish authorities now have their eye on the Spanish QEV Technologies. QEV Technologies wants to produce electric trucks for Volta in Sweden, among other things.
