Round three with more electricity and without diesel
Generation change for a permanent fixture in the segment: the Nissan Qashqai is one of the most popular compact SUVs. Generation III can drive electrically.
Nissans The compact SUV has long since gone from being inexpressible to being indispensable: The Qashqai is one of the brand’s best-selling models. Now the manufacturer is launching the third generation. What is changing? We will clarify that in the detailed new presentation.
The Nissan Qashqai III at a glance:
- 4.43 meter long compact SUV
- New platform from the Renault-Nissan group
- As mild hybrid and serial hybrid (range extender)
- Available with 140 hp, 158 hp and 190 hp
Nissan Qashqai: dimensions and interior
The new Nissan Qashqai takes over the current brand front, as it was last at Nissan Juke and Ariya uses: There is a big grill, lots of small edges and LED lights. Compared to its predecessor, the Qashqai has increased in length – but with a length of 4.43 meters it is still one of the more manageable representatives in the C-segment of SUVs. Nissan promises: The space should be long for everyday life. Because a new substructure and a wheelbase that has grown by two centimeters should improve the space available in the interior.
In addition, the Qashqai is supposed to be more stylish inside. He receives a tidy cockpit with a large, free-standing touchscreen. An improved infotainment menu with higher resolution and improved connectivity flickers across the screen. A new addition to the surcharge list is a head-up display.
Qashqai III: Engines and Electrification
Nissan electrifies the Qashqai’s drive portfolio, but does without a power connection. Instead, there are two very different approaches. Namely two mild hybrid strings and the model called E-Power with a serial hybrid drive. With the latter drive, a 190 hp electric motor takes over the propulsion completely alone – the gasoline engine only acts as a generator. This eliminates range worries, and the Qashqai does not need a large amount of energy storage in the sub-floor. But this Nissan does not drive locally emission-free. The manufacturer specifies around 122 grams of CO2 per kilometer – that would correspond to a consumption of 5.3 liters of petrol per 100 kilometers
Nissan’s 1.3-liter turbo Benizner, known from its predecessor, receives moderate electrical support. A 12-volt belt starter generator assists with starting and accelerating. This drive should be available with 140 hp and 158 hp. The chance of all-wheel drive and a continuously variable CVT automatic is only available with the top petrol engine. All other Qashqai only drive the front wheels.
New Qashqai: Assistance systems and security
Nissan already introduced the traffic jam assistant called Pilot Assist in the Facelift of Generation II. This allows the Qashqai to steer itself on short stretches of road, aligning its speed with the car in front. For the new model, Nissan promises more powerful electronic helpers – supplemented by the ability to independently adjust the speed to speed limits and curves.
Official information on the price is not yet available. To put it into perspective: The Qashqai is currently starting at just under 27,000 euros – but in the last few months of its tenure, Nissan has only offered this model in higher, more extensive equipment lines. With the new Nissan Qashqai III, we expect more down-to-earth entry-level variants – and a more attractive base price.
The Nissan Qashqai will continue to be built at Nissan’s Sunderland plant, the largest automobile plant in Great Britain. The manufacturer had left this open for a long time because the Brexit process did not allow the Japanese to plan long-term costs. Most recently, however, the decision was made to continue operating the plant in northern England for the long term. Instead, however, Nissan will close the Barcelona plant at the end of 2021. In the meantime, only the Navara and the pick-up trucks are produced there Transporter e-NV200.
