The Nissan Townstar, unveiled this week, also comes as a passenger version Combi. It is also known that the Netherlands will only receive the electrically powered version of the Townstar. The petrol version passes us by.
With new names and a brand new model, Nissan wants to take a firmer corner of the van tail in the coming years. The Nissan Townstar, a twin brother of the new Renault Kangoo, is the best seller in the compact segment. The Nissan Townstar Combi will also be added for passenger transport. It offers five people a seat and is also good for 775 liters of luggage space.

Although Nissan presents both the delivery version and the Combi internationally with the choice between a combustion engine and an electric powertrain, that choice does not apply to the Netherlands. The 130 hp and 245 Nm strong 1.3 petrol engine, coupled to a manual six-speed gearbox, passes us by. For the Netherlands, Nissan is fully committed to the electric Townstar. It has a 122 hp electric motor and a 44 kWh battery pack on board, good for an expected driving range of 285 km. The Nissan Townstar outperforms the Renault Kangoo in both power and range, but inquiries from AutoWeek shows that in practice the Renault Kangoo delivers similar performances. At the time of the Kangoo’s unveiling, the expected values were simply a bit lower.
The fully electric Nissan Townstar distinguishes itself from its petrol brothers by a somewhat different grille. A more closed whole, without the thick border around it that is so characteristic of Nissans. The all-electric Townstar has a grille that, according to the manufacturer, follows the same design philosophy as that of the also electric Ariya. More like the ‘new Nissan’, which is also reflected in the use of the new Nissan logo. The electric Townstar will be the first model in Europe to bear that emblem.
