Nissan presents the Townstar. The successor of the NV250 and of course the brother of the new Renault Kangoo and Mercedes-Benz Citan.
As before, Nissan is also joining the van family that we know based on the Renault Kangoo. The all-new Kangoo kicked off, followed by the Mercedes-Benz Citan and now the Nissan Townstar is here. In terms of appearance, the Townstar does not cause too many surprises. The Townstar looks more like the Renault Kangoo than the Mercedes-Benz Citan, although the grille in particular gives the Nissan a bit of its own face. Inside, the similarities are also clear, in fact, the Townstar has a dashboard that is almost identical to that of the Kangoo, with the centrally placed optional 8-inch touchscreen as a big eye-catcher.
On a technical level we also come across well-known cases. The Nissan Townstar will be available with both a petrol engine and a fully electric powertrain. The petrol engine is a 1.3 that delivers 130 hp and 240 Nm of torque. At Renault you can also get the 1.3 TCe as a 100 hp strong variant, but at Nissan the more powerful version is the only choice for the time being. Moreover – and that is quite striking – people are still silent in all languages about diesel power sources. The Kangoo and Citan do have them.
Nissan Townstar
The electric powertrain has two surprises in store. Nissan is talking about a 122 hp electric motor, where the Renault Kangoo E-Tech Electric has to do with 102 hp. Perhaps a more powerful version is in the pipeline for the electric Kangoo. The battery pack is the same size: 44 kWh. The Nissan Townstar should be able to cover 283 km with this and although it is not yet officially WLTP homologated, that is almost 20 km further than the Renault Kangoo E-Tech Electric. The bottom line therefore does not seem to have been taken out of the can with the Renault brother of this Townstar and so we can cautiously count on better figures when the electric Kangoo comes on the market next year. Recharging is possible with 11 kW or optional 22 kW charging power. The DC charger uses a maximum of 75 kW and then you have charged the battery pack from 0 to 80 percent in about 42 minutes.
The Nissan Townstar logically comes in two different sizes: a short version with (if we look at the numbers of the Kangoo) 3.3 cubic meters of cargo space and a long version with 4.3 cubic meters of space. The maximum payload is 800 kilos and the Nissan Townstar can tow up to 1,500 kilos. More detailed information for the Dutch market will follow at a later date. Count on the Nissan Townstar not to be at the dealer until the new year.
