No “weaker” road casualties in Helsinki in 2019

For Helsinki, the past year has been a very good year for road safety. No one pedestrian or cyclist died in 2019 on the streets of the Finnish capital.

Experts believe that the reduced maximum speeds have a positive influence on road safety. In the city with around 650,000 inhabitants, a maximum speed of 30 km/h applies in most residential areas. On the larger city roads, the limit is 10 km/h higher and in the suburbs drivers may not exceed 50 km/h.

It should be noted that 2019 is not a spotless year for the European capital. Last year, one motorist and two drivers of a motorcycle were killed. In the mid-60s, the traffic death rate was considerably higher. In 1965, 84 people were killed.
