For Helsinki, the past year has been a very good year for road safety. No one pedestrian or cyclist died in 2019 on the streets of the Finnish capital.
It is the first time since the measurements were started in 1960 that no pedestrian or cyclist dies in Helsinki. Experts believe that the reduced maximum speeds have a positive influence on road safety. In the city with around 650,000 inhabitants, a maximum speed of 30 km/h applies in most residential areas. On the larger city roads, the limit is 10 km/h higher and in the suburbs drivers may not exceed 50 km/h.
It should be noted that 2019 is not a spotless year for the European capital. Last year, one motorist and two drivers of a motorcycle were killed. In the mid-60s, the traffic death rate was considerably higher. In 1965, 84 people were killed.
