NotchNook is an app for macOS that transforms the notch on MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models into a functional notch. You can compare NotchNook with the Dynamic Island on the latest iPhones. The app creates an interactive space around the notch and is available in Setapp.
The space around the notch is called ‘Nook’ by the app and provides a number of useful functions, such as quick access to media buttons, widgets, shortcuts and files.
How does NotchNook work?
When you move the mouse pointer into the area of your Mac’s physical notch, the so-called Nook will be displayed slightly enlarged. Clicking on it activates the Nook. An interface will appear that gives you direct access to the controls of apps that can play media such as Apple Music, YouTube and Spotify.
The Nook is also equipped with a ‘Tray’ in which you can place files that you use regularly. The tray is also useful for moving files between different apps or desktops.
It is also possible to control system functions such as volume and brightness controls from the Nook. Instead of the standard macOS view, NotchNook elegantly displays these settings in a Dynamic Island style.
AirDrop functionality can also be activated in the Nook, which simplifies file sharing. There is also a special Mirror function in the app. If you activate this, your Mac’s Facetime camera will be activated and you can see what’s happening behind you. However, the representation of this is very small.
Also for Macs without a notch
NotchNook is not limited to Macs with a notch. The app works on all macOS devices and can even change the notch appearance on screens without a physical notch.
The developers are continuously working on improvements and new features, including the upcoming ‘Pipelines’ feature that enables advanced file processing. A function to automatically extract and compress archive files will also be added shortly. The currently available widgets and their functionality may be expanded or modified in the future.
