Legislative amendment proposal

Anyone who is caught behind the wheel several times with too much alcohol will lose their driver’s license for life. At least the VVD sees this as an ideal situation.
Alcohol abuse in traffic remains a problem. Checks, alcolocks and campaigns have not been able to put an end to this. Then it is time for stricter measures, the VVD seems to think. The party is now proposing to deny a notorious drunk driver a lifelong driving license, reports RTL News. These are drivers who have been caught several times and have made victims. Antisocial road users with such a ‘record of service’ should also be able to lose their driving license for life.
There is currently a maximum sentence of ten years driving disqualification. That has to change, explains VVD member of parliament Daniël Koerhuis: “These are reckless drivers who deliberately take the risk of causing a serious accident.” Koerhuis will soon officially submit this proposal to the Minister of Infrastructure and Water Management. If it comes to that, it is up to a judge to determine whether the lifelong disqualification from driving is an appropriate punishment.
