Number of campers doubled in five years

The number of campers in the Netherlands has increased by almost 49 percent over the past five years to 138,500 units. This means that since 2015, 45,500 motorhomes have been added in our country, BOVAG and data provider RDC report Monday.

The campers were especially popular in the provinces of Utrecht, Friesland, Overijssel and South Holland. In Utrecht, the number of campers increased by 55 percent, in South Holland by 51 percent. In Friesland, the number rose to about nine thousand, which means that one in twenty multi-person households in that province now has a camper.

Thanks to the popularity of motorhomes, the Netherlands currently has 558,000 caravans and motor homes, compared to around 548,000 at the start of 2015. As a result, one in nine households now owns a motor home or caravan.

The percentage of households that have a caravan or camper van in the driveway is highest in the north and east of the Netherlands. Drenthe is the frontrunner with a percentage of 18.9 percent. The largest absolute numbers can be found in South and North Brabant.
