Number of imported used cars is decreasing

10 percent less from 2021, increase for EVs

Number of imported used cars is decreasing

The import of used passenger cars and vans decreased in the first seven months of this year compared to the same period in 2021. This is apparent from figures from Bovag and RDC. In the first seven months of this year, a total of 173,193 units were imported, about 20,000 less than last year. However, the import of EVs increased considerably.

2021 was a record year for car imports, so it’s not surprising that fewer used cars are being imported from abroad this year. Nevertheless, the import in the first seven months of this year is 25,000 copies higher than the same period in 2019, the last year before corona. In percentage terms, car imports decreased by more than 10 percent from January to July compared to 2021, but compared to 2019, imports are still 16 percent higher.

Significantly more passenger cars were imported in January and February 2022 than in the same months in 2021. Import figures have fallen since February of this year. To illustrate: 21,135 used passenger cars were imported last month, almost 27.5 percent less than in July 2021. A similar pattern can be seen with vans. Last month, 2,698 used delivery vans from abroad received a Dutch registration, a decrease of almost a quarter compared to July last year.

EVs more popular to import

The Dutch car market seems to have an increasing interest in EVs from abroad, because in the past seven months, 8 percent of passenger car imports consisted of EVs. In the same period in 2021, the EV share in imports was only 2.5 percent. In concrete numbers, this amounts to 12,384 versus 4,397 EVs respectively. So that’s almost a threefold increase. With a share of 63 percent, the petrol engine is still the most popular choice for an import car, although the petrol engine still had a market share of 77 percent in the import in the first seven months of last year. The dwindling market share of petrol is mainly due to the increasing interest in EVs and hybrids. In the first seven months of this year, 18 percent of all imported cars were hybrids, a doubling compared to the same period last year. The share of diesel in the import figures remained stable at 10.4 percent.

Of the used vans, the lion’s share, 85 percent, still has a diesel engine. Nevertheless, the interest in electric delivery vans is also increasing. A total of 656 plug-in buyers were imported in the past seven months, compared to 424 in 2021.
