Number of (partly) electric shared cars doubled

The number of (partly) electric shared cars has doubled in a year, from more than 5,000 in March 2020 to 11,500 in March this year. This is evident from figures from the Traffic and Transport Knowledge Platform (CROW-KpVV).

About 13 percent of Dutch shared cars are fully electric or a plug-in hybrid, while only about 3 percent of normal cars in the Netherlands are electric. Outgoing State Secretary Steven van Weyenberg (Infrastructure) speaks of good news. According to the minister, ‘for many people car sharing is also an affordable alternative to their own car or second car. And if it’s electric, the benefits only get bigger.’

However, the news is not exclusively positive. Research has shown that the lag in the number of charging stations at parking places for shared cars can act as a brake on growth. “The realization of charging infrastructure in public space takes time, and therefore requires extra planning from providers of shared cars in the Netherlands,” according to CROW-KpVV. So there is work to be done to continue the upward trend.

The number of shared cars is increasing in general. This spring there were almost 90,000 shared cars on the road in the Netherlands, more than 13,000 more than the year before. For the time being, this growth is accelerating, CROW-KpVV reports.
