Jeep has the Wrangler, Ford recently the Bronco and now the Chinese Wey also has a relatively angular no-nonsense offroader on the menu. We welcome: the Tank 300.
Wey is one of the brands of the Chinese behemoth Great Wall, a brand with which the company claims to focus on the development and sale of ‘premium models’. Wey’s line-up is a new addition. The car that until recently went through life as Project 01 is now presented as Tank 300 in production form.
Unfortunately, Wey has really only shown the Tank 300 and that means that we are not yet learning anything new about the technology of the angular SUV. It is known that the Tank 300, just like cars like the Jeep Wrangler and Ford Bronco, is built on a ladder chassis. The frame comes from the last year’s refreshed Havel H9. So it is not unlikely that the engines that Wey hangs in the Tank 300 also come from that SUV. That would mean that the Tank 300 will be available with a 225 hp 2.0 four-cylinder and possibly also with a 190 hp diesel engine.
The exterior of the Tank 300 looks quite sober, despite the fact that retro-like design elements have been added here and there. The cheerful round viewers are cleaved by LED strips and Wey hangs the spare wheel on the back of the SUV, which is fitted with a sturdy wheel arch edges and large side mirrors. It is the first time that the Chinese manufacturer shows the interior of the Tank 300. It is a bit clichéd to look for similarities with existing cars in a new Chinese model, but we cannot ignore the fact that the dashboard is very similar to the ones that Mercedes-Benz puts in its models. Not only do the round ventilation grilles strongly remind you of the outlets in modern Benzen, the two optically fused digital screens also breathe a Mercedes atmosphere.
The Tank 300 will enter the Chinese market later this year. In the Netherlands you do not expect the car on the market. Are we sorry about that?
