Depending on how many days you can get away from home and how challenging it may be, there are many different motorcycle routes on this planet that are worth it. Some are good for beginners, others for a seasoned connoisseur. In this article you will find some inspiration from interesting routes around the world, some closer to home, some further afield.
The United Kingdom
The UK has a lot to offer when it comes to motorcycle routes. There are many different routes in the country that are worth doing. You could cross Scotland from Perth to Inverness, but you could also go further north with a route through the Scottish highlands that starts and ends Inverness.
You might also consider the Isle of Man and Isle of Sky as both have great views and shorter motorcycle routes. The Isle of Man is known worldwide for the illustrious Isle of Man TT, but is also highly recommended outside of those races.
If you head further south, you can drive through the Dales National Park in Yorkshire. This is an easy route with beautiful scenery. This can easily be combined with a trip to the Lake District and a drive over Wrynose Pass. This way you can book a wonderful holiday and drive through several parts of the country.
Norway
Norway is a challenging country to ride a motorcycle, but well worth the effort. There are many winding roads, with magnificent views that go on endlessly. One of the most popular routes in Norway is the so-called “troll ladder” (Trollstigen) which is part of road 63. This road starts at Andalsnes and ends at the Geirangerfjord. But the most spectacular thing about this route are the intense hairpin bends and high mountain peaks that you will drive through.
A lot further south on the Lysvegen road there are also beautiful hairpin bends surrounded by fjords and extensive nature. If you want to go to Norway for a longer motorcycle holiday, you can’t miss the E69 road. This road starts in northern Norway at Olderfjord and goes all the way to North Cape, the northernmost tip of Europe. Enough choice, therefore, for a motorcycle holiday in Norway.
Should you prefer to venture further afield and consider taking a longer motorcycle holiday, these two destinations are ideal.
The United States
This huge country has many routes to offer, which are often longer and with which you can easily travel for a longer period of time. Firstly Route 66. This most famous route cannot be missed from this list. This road cuts across the United States, starting at Chicago and ending at Los Angeles.
You can choose to do the entire route, which will take you about 4 weeks, or opt for a smaller piece if you don’t have that many days. Route 66 takes you along many highlights of America, such as Chicago, Las Vegas, the Grand Canyon and the beautiful beaches of Los Angeles.
The Pacific Coast Highway also begins in California, with which you can drive from San Francisco to Portland Oregon. This route takes you through Big Sur, past Red Wood National Park and the many beaches in that area.
Another unique route in America is in Hawaii. The Road to Hana is a beautiful route on the island of Maui in Hawaii. With this route you discover Hawaiian nature, such as deserted beaches and dense jungle.
However, if you prefer to stay in the east of America, there is a short route through North Carolina, namely the Tail of the Dragon. This route is perfect for the motorcycle. It has many curves, and you can drive straight through the mountains and forests without any restrictions.
Please note that you need an ESTA to travel to America. This is easy to apply with the online form and is usually approved within hours and is valid once the ESTA is approved. With a valid US ESTA, you can travel to the US for two years without restrictions, and each trip can only be a maximum of 90 days.
Australia
This may not be the first country that comes to mind when you think about motorcycling, but in Australia there are also some routes that every motorcyclist should have done at least once.
The Stuart Highway is Australia’s Route 66, a road from Darwin to Port Augusta. This route, of almost 3000 km, goes right through Australia, past Alice Springs and through the beautiful Outback (red desert). If you prefer to explore the coast of Australia, you can also drive the Great Ocean Road. This goes from Torquay to Allansford and passes many national parks, so there are views over the vast countryside and the ocean. Torquay is a suburb of Melbourne, so it can be combined with a visit to the cultural center of Australia.
To travel to Australia you need an Australia visa, namely an eVisitor. The eVisitor is an electronic visa that can be easily arranged online via the online form. It’s valid for one year, but that doesn’t mean you can stay in Australia for one year. With the eVisitor you can only stay in the country for 3 months at a time. Make sure to apply for your visa well in advance so that there are no surprises when you are about to embark on your fantastic motorcycle adventure.
