Downpipe on it, different exhaust, open filter, so more than 210 hp?
The Opel Corsa OPC Nürburgring Edition: with an output of 210 hp, the most powerful Corsa to date. After all, a more powerful version of the Opel Corsa never appeared. We remember it well: in the early 1980s, the Opel Corsa started as a good city car. But over the years came the GSi’s and the OPC’s and the little Opel got super power.
That’s true! At the time, a Nürburgring Edition of the already impressive Opel Corsa OPC appeared that had a little more power. How would they have done that? Turned up the turbo a bit?
Larger turbo than standard Corsa OPC but also limited slip differential
Jorg van Rooij likes to update us. “It was really more than that. This not only has a larger turbo than a standard OPC, but also a limited-slip differential, a Bilstein coilover kit and 18-inch instead of 17-inch wheels. So work has really been done. I also installed a downpipe, a different exhaust and a sports air filter and I removed one catalytic converter.” Jorg’s uncle has an Opel garage, so he is nice and close to the fire for all those jobs. “I first drove a Corsa GSi and then this one. Not many people know about the existence of this version and you will not find them in the Netherlands. This was originally delivered in Austria; in fact, to my knowledge, it is the first to be registered in Austria.” The car still bears the traces of that. On the bonnet, a German-language advertisement with which this car once drove around has a permanent place in the paint. “I can’t brush that off anymore. It needs to be repainted. That has already happened with the roof.”
Haven’t been to the Nürburgring yet
With a car that is called Nürburgring Edition, we want to know from Jorg whether he has ever ventured on that circuit. “I’ve been there, but I don’t dare. If something happens, it is an eternal waste of the car.” Enough talk: it’s time for serious business: we’re here for a power measurement.
Nice flow in the 1.6 turbo engine
After all the adjustments, does the Opel have even more power than the already not sick 210 hp from the brochure? Yes, this Corsa is very potent! The power is considerably more than what the manufacturer says, while the maximum torque has increased only slightly. Would Jorg’s adjustments have done their job? “That could very well be,” says surveyor Ghisbert van Ginhoven. “In any case, the flow in the engine is very good.” Before Jorg leaves, he entrusts us with another standard complaint of this power unit: “If you drive at speeds around 200 km/h, it can happen that cylinder 4 receives too little fuel and thus causes damage to the engine.” Well, driving fast in the most powerful Corsa ever can cost you dearly if you’re not careful!
