OnePlus has announced that there will soon be a single software experience for both OxygenOS and OPPO’s ColorOS. The new software will run on both brands’ phones from 2022. It is part of the so-called OnePlus 2.0 plan.
OnePlus 2.0
Pete Lau, the CEO of OnePlus, announces in a roundtable discussion with journalists that his company is entering a new phase. It was previously announced that teams from OnePlus will collaborate with those from OPPO, but in the OnePlus 2.0 plan Pete Lau explains exactly what that means.
First of all, the software teams of the two smartphone manufacturers will work closely together and there will be a new shell that according to OnePlus “combines the best of OxygenOS and ColorOS”. The fast and light OxygenOS software comes together with the reliable ColorOS, which is rich in functions. During our conversation with OnePlus, Pete Lau wanted to make it clear to us that all these advantages can coexist perfectly.
New software shell in 2022
In 2022, OnePlus will present the software together with the upcoming flagship – the suspected OnePlus 10 – and later in the year an update for existing devices is on the agenda. It also became clear that Pete Lau wants to continue the integration of the software teams from OPPO and OnePlus, so that they could eventually develop the software for other products together. Think of smartwatches or the apps for wearables.
Pete Lau already became OPPO’s chief operating officer (COO) in June 2020 alongside his job as CEO of OnePlus. “Some of you may have doubts upon hearing this news,” said OnePlus’ chief executive. “Believe me, I read your comments online every day. Still, after over a year of overseeing product development for both systems, I can tell you that an integrated operating system keeps the DNA of OxygenOS—that you love so much—intact. will improve the entire user experience,” promises Pete Lau.
The difference between OnePlus and OPPO
Furthermore, OPPO and OnePlus will also share more resources and the two manufacturers are also working together for research & development. This means that they will work together on new technological developments.
You can ask yourself whether there will still be such a big difference between phones from OnePlus and OxygenOS, but Pete Lau is convinced of that. “Each series within OnePlus and OPPO has its own target group and each device has a different aspect to focus on.” According to the OnePlus, the brand’s phones also retain some features and personalization options that are specific to the brand. It also remains possible for users to unlock the bootloader and test custom ROMs.
Focus on cameras
Furthermore, the OnePlus 2.0 plan shows that thanks to the new collaboration, the brand has more possibilities to expand its product range, and that it can propose a customized offer per region. The company also makes it clear that get will continue to work with the camera manufacturer Hasselblad on the camera of OnePlus phones. This cooperation is primarily related to the camera software.
The brand will eventually come with a new camera module for phones, improved zoom options, more accurate colors in image processing and a modified lens optic.
What can we expect?
For now, it is difficult to say whether OnePlus will really succeed in taking steps forward without the phones being very similar to OPPO devices. The company collaborates not only in software development but also in R&D, and the companies only want to work more closely in the future. We may find out more about this once the new phone software shell is introduced next year.
What do you think? Is this collaboration going to steer OnePlus in the right direction, or are you afraid that the brand will lose itself? Let us know in the comments at the bottom of this article.
