The Mercedes Vision EQXX is even more aerodynamic than the already slippery Mercedes EQS. An air resistance of 0.17 means nothing to anyone, so Mercedes has provided some context. An American football is between 0.18 and 0.20, but a penguin comes (in the water we assume) to no less than 0.05.
Mercedes calls the Vision EQXX “the electric equivalent of a 1-litre car”. And we see that. Like the original 1-litre car – the Volkswagen XL1 – the Mercedes Vision EQXX is optimized for the best possible air resistance and the highest possible efficiency. On a relatively modest battery, it should be able to reach a range of 1000 km.
Mercedes Vision EQXX is a halo car
We deliberately write ‘should be able to achieve’, because Mercedes admits that the range of 1000 km is only apparent from simulations in the computer. The Vision EQXX is a hello car, a technology banner. It is the most efficient, aerodynamic and lightest electric car Mercedes has ever built.
Well, that’s not surprising, of course, because Mercedes hasn’t built so many electric cars. The EV range of the German premium manufacturer now consists of the Mercedes EQA, EQB, EQC, EQS and EQV. We will not see this Vision EQXX in the showroom – also in the long term. He serves as the standard bearer of technology.
Optimized in the wind tunnel
As mentioned, the Vision EQXX can achieve a range of 1000 km. He does this with a battery that is almost 100 kWh in size (sorry, Mercedes is not more specific). According to Mercedes, typical electric cars spend about two-thirds of their energy making their way through the air, which is why the developers of the Vision EQXX have focused on that.
The shape of the four-door sedan has been optimized in the wind tunnel. That’s why he has a clear teardrop shape (also seen from the top), with an extended stern and a truncated butt. As you often see with electric cars, the wheels are closed for better aerodynamics.
Low weight electric car
Another important factor that makes the Vision EQXX so efficient is its relatively low weight. Many electric cars go towards 2000 kg, partly because the battery is so heavy. The Vision EQXX weighs 1750 kg. Mercedes has managed to achieve this through the use of carbon fiber, fiberglass, aluminum and perforated materials.
95 percent of the horsepower to the wheels
The drive is provided by a 204 hp electric motor, which would consume less than 10 kWh/100 km. Mercedes claims that 95 percent of the power is transferred to the wheels. A significant improvement compared to a ‘normal’ EV, where that percentage is only 30 percent, according to Mercedes.
Interior screen of 1.2 meters wide
And as you can see in the interior of the Vision EQXX, the electric car’s shielding continues. The display on the dashboard is no less than 1.2 meters wide. It is not – as with the Mercedes EQS with Hyperscreen – made up of several screens, but is one display.
