Rare phenomenon
Look at him casually standing half on the sidewalk, this Opel Ascona. Ready to hit the road again. Almost 40 years old, but clearly still in use. Who said the last Ascona wasn’t so loved? In any case, that does not apply to this copy.
When you think of the Opel of the 1980s, you probably immediately think of the Kadett. Not surprising, because almost absurd numbers of them were sold in that decade. That was not so much the case with its bigger brother, the Ascona. It is true that this was also a common appearance (the sales numbers exceeded 10,000 for years), but direct competitor Ford Sierra, among others, was more popular and successor Vectra A also exceeded Acona sales in the first years. There were some reasons why the Ascona C has always remained a bit in the shadow of its predecessors.
But okay, enough whining. As far as we are concerned, every ever so inconspicuous car is sooner or later special and that certainly applies to the last Ascona. After all, you rarely see it anymore and moreover, we have the hatchback here for the first time. The undersigned came across it several times and was finally able to take a picture of the Ascona this week.
Less than half a year ago we already had a clearly more decrepit Ascona C in this section. That was a sedan, just like 7.5 years ago. The Ascona hatchback seems to be a rarer phenomenon in our country and you will almost never find such a neat pre-facelift Ascona. It is not completely flawless, but the flaws should not have a name. Especially when you consider how they often fell prey to the rust devil, this is still a neat Ascona. Tasty middle of the road is the 39-year-old Opel too. The typical gold-beige color fits perfectly with the era and it is one with the 90 hp 1.6 in the nose. A popular overall picture at the time.
The Ascona must belong to an enthusiast. Not because you would have to be an enthusiast to go for such an Ascona, but because according to the registration data, the car was imported in 2008 and almost immediately came into the hands of the current owner. So that person was probably looking for something like that and apparently the love is still there after 15 years. Nice is not it?
