Old and rough
With a car that is forty years old, thoughts quickly turn to a cherished sleeper, but there are also cars that reach that age more or less by accident. This seems to be the case with this early Opel Ascona C.
Forty years, the garlands are allowed to go out! Since last spring, this Opel is four decades old and therefore never has to pay a cent in motor vehicle tax again. Perhaps the current owner has been waiting for that, because the car was last transferred not so long ago – at the end of 2020.
It is an original Dutch Ascona in a wonderfully typical green shade. That it is a fairly early copy of the Ascona C, can be seen from the grille. It is black and clearly different in shape from the copy on the later Ascona that appeared in this section in 2015.
In front of the grille we find in this case two striking yellow lamps, which we can safely call ‘time-correct accessories’. In that category we also mention the rubber rear spoiler. Nevertheless, this Ascona probably does not get much hands on in enthusiast circles, because it mainly seems to be a workhorse. There are dents, there are non-original steel wheels, the right windscreen wiper is the far too modern ‘flatblade’ type, we spot all kinds of stickers and sticker residue and the GAIK number plates have already been lost twice, judging by the duplicate code.
Above all, however, there is rust. Rust under the front bumper and along the hood, but especially around the rear wheel arches. In the past, all kinds of life-prolonging operations have been carried out with an inappropriate color of green, putty and black paint, but these have apparently had only limited effect. We are therefore curious whether this Ascona can enjoy its classic status for a long time to come, because that requires some love and attention.
