Opel Eisenach factory has a future again

The German Opel plant in Eisenach will also continue to operate under Opel in the future. That explains parent company Stellantis. There is also good news for home base Rüsselsheim, about which there were also uncertainties.

There has been a lot of talk about Opel’s German factories lately. Stellantis would like to get rid of the German factories. The facility in Eisenach, where the Opel Grandland comes off the production line, is said to be slated for sale, as is the one in its hometown of Rüsselsheim. Opel CEO Uwe Hochgeschurtz recently came up with the redeeming word: the factories are not being sold. Now there is more concrete news for the Eisenach plant. The workers’ union IG Metall and Stellantis have reached an agreement for the future production of the Opel Grandland in Eisenach. For how long exactly, is not reported. In any case, there seems to be certainty for several years. The factory will become a separate subsidiary of Opel.

There is also good news for the short term. Work is currently at a standstill in Eisenach as a result of the chip crisis, but that will change in January. Then Grandland production can be resumed. The work was already laid down at the beginning of October, so by then there will be a three-month production stop.

Although the statement by the CEO of Opel about the German factories was already a writing on the wall, there is also good news for Opel’s headquarters in Rüsselsheim. IG Metall reports that the ‘existing structure’ will also be preserved there. Although the union is of course happy that there is now clarity, it does make it clear that Stellantis and Opel have touched a nerve in recent months. IG Metall denounces the uncertainty that has arisen about the future of the German factories and hopes that Stellantis and Opel will “operate more constructively and transparently” in the future.
